Re: How much horsepower do you have?
You need to include more details like heads(aluminum or iron), 2wd or 4wd is a little helpful, pump gas or up to alcohol. Ihad a 355 in a 81 4wd that was around 350-375 hp with 10:1 and aluminum heads on premium. What size you are putting in is also helpful, bbc or sbc??

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
I'm running a 355 with a set of 2.02 double hump heads, ported and polished, steel crank, LT1 rods, forged flattops running about 10:1. 780cfm QJet, Performer RPM gasket matched, Hedman long tube headers with 1-5/8" primaries to 3" collectors running to Cherry Bomb header mufflers. The cam is .480" lift on 110 degree CL. MSD 6AL box with MSD cap, rotor and coil with Accel wires. I'm guessing it's putting a little over 300 to the tires, probably about 400 at the crank.
Those summit heads are basically the old double hump heads. They're great heads for the price. |

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
I'd check your local machine shops and salvage yards.. I'm sure you can get both for a bunch cheaper for $350.

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
You make all your power in the heads. Run a good exhaust with an x-pipe to get it all out. Buy a good, streetable cam that you don't need a vacuum can to run your brakes off. I'm assuming the truck is going to be a daily driver. With $800, you can buy a master rebuild kit, a good cam and have your heads re-worked(3 angle, clean the bowls up, maybe a good port job) and make a good 300hp. You start getting radical cams and you'll have to start worrying about matching your converter to the cam. A good stall converter will run about $250 or better.

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
310 HP edelbrock "performer" crate motor. (310 at the crank)
It wont get out of its own way.

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
~450hp/450ft lbs at the flywheel. It gets out of it's own way.

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
I'm still working on a plan to extract 400+ from a 350 and still smog it without breaking the bank...

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
My carb'd vortec 454 should be making at least 290HP and 410lb-ft torque. It will roast the right side tire all the way through first and well into second if I let it. That is with a stock torque converter and 2.72 gears with a peg leg diff. Tires are 275/60's. I would guess it could run a mid 15 sec 1/4 mile as it is.Will be putting in 3.73 gears and a posi soon I hope.

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
Well bud, a motor is just a huge vaccume pump, so the more air u can get into the combustion chamber, and the exspell it the more HP u will make, but their is such thing as too big, so here is a idea u could try.. Get your self a set if either Vortec heads or a good set of 202/160 heads. pair it up with a good low to mid range cam say a lunati Bracket master 480 lift or even a 350 horse 327 cam and, then bump the Comp ratio up a bit and im willing to bet that u will see close to 400 or more at the flexplate!

Re: How much horsepower do you have?
My buddy in Michigan runs a bored and whored rear digger S10 and claims to squeeze around 350 HP from a 355 small block with a mild Lunati cam, Vortec heads, and Demon carb. The bottom end is a relatively stock 4 bolt.
I have never dyno’d anything I own nor ever really cared to. Although, the guy that helped tune the Vortec 8.1L I just stuffed into my 78’ K10 claims it should run around 425HP and 480 to 500 LB FT of torque. I doubt I will ever dyno it either but from the seat of the paints feel the custom calibrated non-emissions 8.1L definitely feels a heck of a lot stronger than the 8.1L in my stock 2001 Silverado by far. It does feel pretty quick for a 6800 lb truck even mowing through an old school SM465 transmission. It breaks U-joints and leaf springs real easy now.
