Custom Bumpers
I am going to build or modify the bumper on my 87 for more offrad use. I am wanting to see some pics of what you guys have. I am going to be adding a winch in the near future and I am also making the rear. I am including d -rings and light holes. I haven't decided yet if I am just going to put a 2 in receiver style mount so I can move from front to rear, but it is a little weaker than the solid mount but more maneuverable.

The receiver style will be horrible for any 'real' off road use, a set up like that will kill your approach/departure angle in a big way. Here's a link to the many threads we've had regaurding bumbers, found em all by using our search function. *Off Road Bumpers: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...earchid=953236 *Winch Bumpers: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...earchid=953256 Here's two different set ups I've run: Last edited by vtblazer; 09-29-2008 at 07:35 AM. |

Dunno, they were fine, either-way using the search function will give you every thread that has your search word parameters in it, there was something like 6 pages for bumpers when I last looked. |

Re: Custom Bumpers
no pics, but just an idea.
Some of the guys around here run tube bumpers, welded up and fit with a compressed air fitting. Mostly 4" and 5" tubing, used for air storage. This allows them to lower their tire pressure when running through sand or mud, and then they can use the air to put some pressure back in the tires before they hit the pavement again. Nothing spectacular, I just thought it was a cool idea. |

Re: Custom Bumpers
Hey DirtyLarry - so is the winch behind your back bumper? From the pic I was thinking you would slide it in the receiver but then I noticed the fairlead is mounted to the bumper.

Re: Custom Bumpers
Yeah, the rear bumper is also set up for a winch, which I don’t have installed yet but should soon. Planning on a Smittybilt 10,500 lb or a Mile Marker 12,000 lb mainly because those two winches are relatively small and will fit in the tight spot well. There is an old school Hickey Sidewinder under the front bumper as well.
This picture kinda shows how the receiver is secured under the frame. Yes, it does smack, snag and hit just about everything on the trail.

Re: Custom Bumpers
try to find a local custom steel fabrication shop around your location. i am a fabricator, and we have done several custom bumpers for various people and applications. it will probably cost a little more, but you will get exactly what you want, and you can always call it your design. or, if you can weld (and i don't use that term loosely), you can have them form the pieces for you to weld together. save a lot of money in labor

Re: Custom Bumpers
I picked up a used Ranch Hand from an individual that was designed for a Toyota Tundra for cheap....and made it fit my boy's 66.
Made the rear bumper out of 2"x6"x1/4". Its heavy!
