Coal Cannister
Hey guys what year did GM start putting the coal canisters in the trucks?
Ministry of Enviroment pulled me over yesterday in my buddies 1973 truck. Gotta pay $365 if I don't fix it........B/S Could you imagine working for a bunch of clowns like the Ottawa government. And I have to put the CV hose up under the air intake filter or they will squish me like a bug and steal my truck to crush it. Just to save the air they.... vent Please do not attempt to by-pass the word filters by mis-spelling banned words.

Re: Coal Cannister
it is (in the U.S.) federal law to run one if the vehicle had it originally.
Any and all smog control items are required by federal law... doesn't matter if your state checks for it or not. |

Re: Coal Cannister
Chevemall,
First off, I agree: B.S. Ok that said, I performed some research and found that in 1970 the Clean Air Act was passed, this imposed stricter emission standards on the Automobile Industry and while there may have been "Cans" in older models, it appears that installation of the Charcoal Canister was mandatory for 1970+ models until later on when the catalytic converter made its debut in 1975. Now while I cannot vouch for the validity of these claims I am assuming that your model should indeed have the infamous Can (my 72 has one) and that if I am wrong I will swiftly be corrected by a more knowledgeable site member... Re: Coal Cannister
Yo! I installed one that was absent in my '78 3/4 ton 4x4 so that I could vent the twin tanks and my carb float bowl. My PCV dumps into my manifold, but the fuel vapors can be vented directly into the carb dashpot to reduce the vapor emission into the air. Even have the same system installed in my '76 Camaro. Just passive emissions control, so why not? While still building the truck (with just a filter on the fuel vent hose) the garage stunk of vapors. After completing the system, the garage smells NOTICABLY cleaner. Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister
Well off to the wreckers....and I have to pop a tab out of the air cleaner and run the valve cover vent in there to vent back into the engine. But the exhuast the government OKed, is fine spuuing tonns of toxins in the air......
Everything 1987 and older in Ontario I thought was safe from the Gov. grip. BUT no now they have new doe heads driving around ( polluting the air to bother me) So now it is everything 1970 and older........ Have to find a 60's car with a big arse 454 gas sucking hunk of metal. Write " David Suziki for Prime Minister" all over it! lol Merry C Mas All BC

Re: Coal Cannister
Smog police... errr
there own special unit patroling around checking vehicles and they have NO CLUE what they are doing... Was stopped by one some 4 years ago in North Oshawa in my '80 k20 HD....they had no clue what the heck I should have on the truck for emissions. So they write me up a ticket...or lets say a fix it order and to meet them at Micky D's in a couple of weeks. Told me I needed to fix the crankcase vent (to carb air cleaner) add the EGR and they were not to sure about the cats. So I phoned GM Historic vehicles division (in Oshawa)to find out what the truck came with and for $25 got a letter stating what emissions crap came on the truck...That letter stays with the truck for the next who doesn't know nothing "E" officer. So the truck has no charcoal canister, no EGR (the officer confused the blocked off choke thermostat hole in the intake as the EGR...dummm) and no cats ...love the HD versions Fixed the crankcase vent went to Micky D's and tore up the ticket. They had no concern about the air pump not being there....thank you. Oh yah this was a propane truck at the time...just went back to gas this fall. So my '70, '72 and '79 are stock with correct bits

yeah, florida is pretty loose too. I don't mind some controls though, cause I remember standing behind my old 64 oldsmobile, and if you stood back there while it was idling, kinda hard to breath,so some is good I think

Re: Coal Cannister
I totally agree. Im origionally from NY and we had Inspections. When I moved here 5 yrs ago I thought it was stupid not to have any inspections. Im always wondering when looking in the rearview, at that guy who tailgateing me, when was the last time he had his brakes checked.

Yo! Never get stopped or questioned here in Colorado. I try to keep mine runnin' clean just because!
I tune my carb when the temps change and check my exhaust for h'carbon smell regularly. I get better performance and gas mileage that way too! Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister
Todd, I would guess that you know that you don't have any issues because you live in a remote area of the state. If you live in the major 5 county area, you have all the emissions checking plus they check to make sure you have all the emissions equipment the truck came with. I am with you though. I also live in Weld county. Hey is it true that the name of your town is an acronym for "A Unique Little Town" (Ault)?

Re: Coal Cannister
Yo! jlmerie! Yeah!! That's correct! "A Unique Little Town" and I'm remote!
I DO drive into Ft Collins everyday though, and still have never had a suprise inspection of my '76 Camaro. I don't expect any different with my FRANKENTRUCK. The truck is NOT a cat type, but the Camaro was. PM me with your location! Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister
Yo! I also thought that they'd finally exempted 1978 and prior vehicles from emissions control in the state. Do you know if that's true? Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister
Todd, I believe they have reduced emissions testing for the older cars. But not exempt. I also believe the cars and trucks must have the original emmissions equipment installed. So, if your car or truck originally had catalytic converters, they have to be installed to pass the "visual check". I do not have to get any testing (visual or emissions) to get my license plates.

Re: Coal Cannister
they finally just changed the MA laws but for all the wrong reasons. Anything pre 96 is fee from the smog test. However they must have all equipment for visual inspection and not be smoking. Here they will fail you for a check engine light. All post 96 cars are subject to computer controlled emissions testing and Diagnostic code recall. It is ridiculous lets over test the newer cleaner vehicles and not test the polluters. My 84 may have passed but I registered it out of state because there cut off back then was 1983. anything pre 83 just had to pass saftey. but if there was any blue ting to your exhaust they would fail you for saftey.... go figure. Post 83 got visual inspection and tail pipe sniffer.
I do have a quick question on this topic. My 77 is the HD model and I wanted to know if it had cats from the factory. It was ordered as a farm truck and I have heard that HD's did not have cats because of the excess heat. I have heard that farmers would buy the HD models because of the heavy duty but also because the lack of a cat would decrease the chances of a field fire from the exhaust. IS this true? Did my 77 HD come with cats from the factory?

BTW, my '77 also did not have a charcoal canister. The only emissions equipment it had are a PCV valve and a TVS vacuum switch to control a delay valve on the vacuum advance for the distributer. Nothing else.

Re: Coal Cannister
Yo! I think 454HO is correct. My FRANKENTRUCK is a 3/4 ton 4x4 rated at 6200 GVW originally sold in Cheyenne, WY and (unless someone screwed around with it in the past), is non-catalytic and did not have a charcoal cannister. Someone DID add an aftermarket aux tank (that was neglected enough that it was FULL of rust) and I replaced that with a shiny factory tank from the junkyard in Greeley. Therefore, I wanted to vent the two into the carb so I added the cannister. My 2.5" duals from shorty headers have an "H" pipe but no cats.
My '76 Camaro, HOWEVER, came with a single cat-controlled 305. It had crappy exhaust manifolds into a cross-over to the single cat and split into dual outlets. It's now got a 350V8 and long Hooker headers into a pair of 2.5" offset Summit turbos and exits each side just in front of the rear tires. Good luck to the cop that wants to visually inspect the exhaust,...It sits just inches from the ground. There's no indication that the car was to have cats and the year before didn't so you'd have to know your Chevy history. And I spend only a very short period of time inside the front range cities, so there's the question of visiting, or regular travel. No emissions are required for plates. That all said, I feel it's my responsibility to keep the car running as clean as possible, so it has a cannister and PCV, and I tune it constantly. Todd.
