sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
This affects all of us-
take a minute to send your thoughts. I sent one to Nancy, and my state senator as well: Oppose Federal “Cash for Clunkers” Program Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea. The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated. Contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi IMMEDIATELY To Oppose Cash for Clunkers! Call: 202/225-0100 Click here to send an electronic message: http://speaker.house.gov/contact/ __________________________________________ Talking Points Oppose the Use of U.S. Taxpayer Dollars for Cash for Clunkers • I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers” provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved. • “Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage. • Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions. • “Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money. • “Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc. • We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.” Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter. __________________ |

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
I AGREE!!! I followed the link and tactfully gave her my thoughts. We need to keep this American tradition alive. My grandfather passed down the love for the automobile to me, and I want to do the same for my son some day!!! Getting rid of "clunkers" (no matter what the make or model) will take away the culture of hot rodding from our kids. Please people help with this effort!!

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
I let'em know what I thought about it too. They've been trying these sorts of things for years and all we can do is voice our opinions. So if ya have'nt spoken up do so. If ya don't they'll end up taking our cars, guns and everything else we should have the freedom to have as Americans.

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
This has actually been in action in California in one form or another for a long time. I remember reading a notice like this in Hot VW's in the early 90's, but it was for "smog credits". The way this bill worked was that a polluting company(Exxon/Mobile, Chevron were the ones listed) can purchase old cars from pre-82, take them permanently off the road, and recieve a credit against their pollution produced. So, you take a parked non-polluting car, destroy it's future, and they don't have to clean up their amount of pollution produced. The only saving grace to this is the engine block is disabled(broken) and the rest of the car lives a short life at the salvage yard. You will see these cars labeled "engine block disabled" stenciled on the car at the pick-n pull.

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
It really doesn't matter what we say or do, if these Calif. wacko's want to pass this bill they will get it passed. It would take hundreds of thousands of sig. to stop this bill. Just beware for the other things they want to control next.

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
E-mailed Ms. Speaker and my state senator.
Nothing will probably come from it, and I expect some dumb generic response from my senator, but it's no matter... at least we tried. |

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
I just got an email from summit racing (if thats where all this came about sorry im a little late i guess ) About the same issue and they have another link for a SEMA rep you can email also about this deal. I wrote about 6 different short articles to the state rep and put different name and emails from friends that probably wouldn't write in for this its wrong but the more the count to oppose the better!!

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
The folks who really will need to jump on this wagon and drive it are the large dealers of restored and/or classic vehicles like Barrett Jackson and the shows that are produced showing people the art and craft, shile selling advertisements. Both of those mean money for the states they are in. Barrett Jackson stimulates the economy with the sale of some of those half million dollar cars and they send millions to the local and or state economies when they bring their show to town. I know just a little soccer tournament can bring millions into a town as far as hotels, food and tourism. Think what a big production like those shows brings!

Re: sema alert- FEDERAL cash for clunkers program
You don't actually think the politicians actually care about what shows and productions bring into communities or states do you? The only thing DC is interested in is power and thats it!! They don't give a danm about the country or the people, only themselves. Get ready now. The next 4 and possibly more years are going to be a real nightmare for us regular folks who just want to live and be left alone. jim
