How tell if your truck looks bad @$$!!
If a guy with a '90 454 SS follows you about 1 mile to Homedepot to ask if you want to race. Don't laugh it happened to me today. He was disappointed when I told him it was a the orginal 305. I just told I'd race him anyway for fun. We talked for a few minutes since his passenger was interested in the '91 grill conversion. He has an '80s truck too. I told them about my 350 comming soon. The offer to race the '90 454 SS is on in Seguin, Texas when I'm ready. What y'all think. Would my 350 combo take the stock 454?

I dont think so. Those 454ss's haul ass. Dont mess with a big block unless you have something good. Its like when I posted about that kid with a honda civic who thought he could beat a Grand National

the 90's 454 SS trucks are dogs from the factory...if i remember right they only ran like low 16's to high 15's in the 1/4 mile.
They may have big blocks but the performance isn't there...the potential is though! -Jeff |

I remember when those came out I was working changing oil at a fast lube place. One day we had Shelby Dakota (the first small block dodge Dakotas) and a 454 SS in at the same time. The 454 had 15 more hp than the Dakota, pretty sad that GM couldn't do better than that!!!
Of course I know with some tweaking the, big block will spank the mopar all day long.

Mid 16's to high 15's? No wonder he looked at me fun when I replied to his question on what I run. I told him mid 16's with good traction.

All those trucks are good for in stock trim is burning gas and tires. They were/are truly dogs. If tweaked, they can run decent, but not much better.

Those are some sweet rides with alot of potential.
I don't see why your 350 wouldn't spank him. The 305, nope.

You should have just run him right then and there. They are terribly slow pigs as stock trucks. Yes they can be made fast but so can a Pinto!!
I had a 94 S10 SS bone stock, and used to cake walk those all day long in it.!! haha

NO WAY!!! Stock they may be pigs. But ANY big block truck has potential. And they didn't look that bad either. Having 230 HP and close to 400 lbs. tq. in 1990 wasn't bad at all. For the time. They may be pigs stock, but work one up like you would any other truck and you've got a monster. I don't see why you some of you guys put them down but there more practical and more attractive then the new SS. Thats if the new SS keeps its crap ext. cab form.

Yeah I saw that. I actually kinda like the new front ends. I also like the idea that it is stripped down. Like the old bare bones muscle cars. No carpet, 6 spd., no pw, no power doorlocks. You don't need all that if you've got a race truck.

I wanted to race him after I looked under his hood. It was bone stock. Only thing he did was remove the stock air cleaner and added a 14X4 open element. I looked at his tires too. No way he was getting traction with them. I thinks it would have been close. The little smog pump sure would have put a fight. Maybe next time.
