Electric radiator fan

I have a problem with my Old Air Products radiator killing my battery. I know this has two sides, one for all time use and one for controling. My problem is, I have it wired up so as soon as the key comes on it comes on. I want to wire it up so it won't come on until after the truck is started. It is taking alot out of my battery. Does anyone know how to wire this up? I wish I could wire it up so one side works at one temp and the other works at a higher temp. Right now it won't let the temp get up above 160. Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

First you could control the unit with a toggle switch and relay so it does not come on until you flip the switch.

Does it have an adjustable temperature controller?

It has an adjustable for the second fan. I was looking at doing the toggle.

hook it up so neither one comes on till it's needed. (getting hot)
The way you have it now, you are just burning up the electric motors, killing your battery, shortening the life of the charging system, and making lots of noise that you don't need.

I forgot to mention earlier that I have a dual fan setup on my '92 GMC K-3500 and they are both controlled by the the temperature controller.

Do you have A/C? If so hook one up to it so it only comes on when you have the A/C on.
The other one can work off the ground of the temperature senor in the block. Put hot wire to relay and fan and run the ground to the senor. When the temperature senor grounds so does the fan and walla it comes on. If you don't have A/C then hook both up like I said and add a toggle switch into one of them to control yourself.

just make sure that sensor is actually made for controlling the fans, and not a dummy light.
I would also add, you are better off with the sensor in the rad, and not in the engine. You are trying to cool the fluid in the radiator, not the fluid in the engine.

Wired them both together and put a switch in the block. Works like a champ.

Thanx. I had to buy a couple different switches until I got it right. I tried a switch out of a Camaro, but it was set too high. The truck would almost over heat and not even kick the fan on. So, my buddy looked up another switch set close at a lower temp. Works like a champ. That fan only runs for about a minute before it kicks off. Doesn't use a lot of power now.

I lived in Raleigh for a while but was only like 2 years old at the time. I have lived all over the south with dad working for GM it was like living a miltary life. We lived in Charlotte 4 times before I moved out on my own.
The meet is in Salisbury NC.

Yeah, I will try to make it to the meet. I am in the military myself. I have recently moved to the reserves so my daughter and baby on the way wouldn't have to move a lot.

What is up with the Site Supporters putting up pictures of junkyard red 'stangs?

It isn't 'stangs. One other supporter that has been in touch with me has a pic of a red s-10 extreme manguled on his avatar also. Just wondering if it was a game like one of my other forums I am a member of.

That was my daughters Blazer she flip awhile back. She was 17 when she wrecked it now she is 21. Yea he sent me some pictures of it after he saw mine.
