what do you get the 454 from???
what kinda car/truck do you guys take the 454 from? the 454 ss trucks? work trucks what? also what do you expect to pay for one in a wrecked something? i have a 350 but the 454 looks pritty tasty in that engine cmpartment here the old 350 that im posting cause im bored lol

again, i dont know anythin about motors, but mine came from a late 70's burb. the ones in the 454 trucks are dogs, heads suck on them. the key is getting some good heads.

actually the 74 pickup heads casting number 781 are some of the most sought after heads because of the they are open chamber with smaller cc's and they can fit the big valves in them and can be ported to flow just as good or better than a stock rectanglur port heads.

Big Blocks are gettign hard to come by anymore. The junkyards around here don't have them. If they do, they will tell you they don't. Crate engines seem to be the way to go. You know that you're getting a new motor, and a warranty.

i prefer them from a 73 pickup and i think the best heads stock are the 049's the later model peanut ports have alot of bottom end but lack mid and high rpms.id take a 454 over a 396,402 anyday,if anyone wants to trade their 454's for 396-402s i have plenty id trade

I think the best way is to buy a complete truck and snag the motor. The last one I got was in a 78 1 ton dually. After parting out the truck. I came close to getting the motor for free. Or buy the truck and pull the BB and replace it with a SB

MY BLOCK CAME OUT OF A 70 IMPALA. THE DATE CODE IS AUGUST 69. THE SCALLOPS IN THE PAN RAILS ARE CAST IN (NOT GROUND). IT CAME FROM GM WITH A FORGED CRANK. THE HEADS WERE SEMI-CLOSED CHAMBERS, SO I THRU THEM OUT & BUILT A SET OF 049s. RUNS LIKE A SPOTTED-ASS APE.

Older cars in my opinion are the best resources for big block engines. Chevelles, Impalas, etc. But if you're looking for a more torquish oriented motor, head for some bigger trucks. But don't think about getting a 454 ss. They suck supposedly.

I got my 454 out of a 75 3/4 ton. I had it rebuilt and was done by a speedshop. I'll pick it up by Friday. They ported the oval heads, 9.5 comp with a slightly domed forged pistons, weiand intake. I can't wait to drop it in my 72 Lonhorn.

mine came out of a 91 3500 series dually, the heads suck, it is basically a gas hog,w/ decent torque. with a cam and the usual bolt ons i was able to get a 100 hp out of it, now im up in the 330hp range.Its about all i can do w/ the small peanut port heads. The Gen. V-VI blocks are no way near as good as a Mark IV, which are 90 and older, their heads are not interchangeable, so you either have to go new after market, or GM Bowtie heads. as is it will light up 29x15.5x15 sportsmans from a stop, and in drive chirp going into 2nd, this is a LWB c10 and a stock TH350.
also when getting an older 454 know your numbers b/c people will try to pass off 366's as a 454 and a 366 is useless in getting high HP, but its good on the torque.

heads are the key to big power for big blocks, all big blocks make tons of torque but the bigger the heads the more flow and horse power.
the 292 heads must be retangular port becuase my book shows them as a 70 454 450 horse with 2.19 intake valves and 1.88 exhuast. but if you look at the better oval port heads they list casting #781,049,241,820,290 most of them have a 110 cc chamber, considerd a semi open chamber head which means more piston options to get the compression were you want it.good flow alsoaround 250 cc runners intake and 115 cc on the exhaust. the rectangular port heads are only running 300cc intake runners and 120 on the exhuast.

hmm, i'm positive that they're oval port, where can i look into this more? so they're pretty good, right? the guy said they were close to best stock head, besides vette's and stuff

i'm not sure on the heads?my book just shows that they're off of a 70 high per.450 horse,maybe you got the numbers crossed?it says with that valve sive it should be recgtangular intake port.
