differential rebuild
Hey all,
I am researching a change in gearing, 3.08 (2 or 3 series carrier) to 3.73 (4 series carrier). Got a 76 c10, 350/350. 1st question is; can I simply pull the cover, pull the axles, take out the old R&P and put in the 3.73 R&P? Or is there more to this? 2nd questions; I do want it to be a posi unit too. Is gear driven better over clutch? Anyone had specific experience with the gear over clutch choice? thanks in advance.

VT, you've opened a can of worms so to speak. You can just swap the gears over. 3:73 is still a 3 series carrier, BUT, your going to have to change the shim packs to get preload and clearence right. As to your next question. The gear type posi has clutches as well as a gear "locker". It is the tougher of the 2 types. It is also a major PITA if ya bust it. The straight clutch type is the more long lived type and the easiest to overhaul, but it doesn't hold as well. If you haven't done this before I would find someone who has and work with them on yours so you learn how to do it. Setup is critical!! Being off
.001" in gear clearance and it will howl like hell so be ware. Good luck, jim

that's what I was worried about. Haven't rebuilt a differential in 15 years when I replaced a broken pinion. Sounds like I would be inclined to use the clutch diff and not gear type for ease of maintenance and or repair. I like doing this stuff myself.
That said, I guess it's not so easy to shim these 3.73s in straight away? If I bought a set of gears, would they not come with shims to suit my housing and carrier? I guess I need to ask a diff shop but any feedback would be appreciated.

i agree with James if you havn't done it before get someone to show you or get them to do it also if you did do it right and your 3.73's were used they might have a bad wear pattern and it will give you trouble setting up and will still maybe howl. The shims are avalible at any trans/rear shop.

I was thinking used to save money but I wouldn't want to do this job twice because the first was botched due to worn out parts.
