65 Grill Steel or Aluminum
I was tinkering around in the garage today waiting for the wife to come home so we could eat lunch together. I lightly scuffed my grill that was painted white by only lord knows who. Anyways scuff*scuff I see metal. I mean it was so light of a scuff with a rather fine sanding block it was insane.
Now is the grill Steel or Aluminum? I'm sure it might be a bit more obvious if I took it off to look at it and feel the weight of it, but I haven't got that far in my plans. The reason I ask is if its Steel I'm guessing I have to paint it something or have it dipped. If its alluminum couldn't I just strip it down and run with it bare? I really like the look of bare metal and I don't want to really run with Chrome so I thought if I could have a brushed look I'd be in hog heaven. I even thought it would be cool to strip down the bumpers and clear coat them or something. Hell I don't know I'm not a painter. Last edited by kizer; 02-24-2009 at 05:13 PM. |

Re: 65 Grill Steel or Aluminum
I guess I should ask if it is alluminum is it ok to leave bare?
Yeah we have a ton of them on our fridge too. Im sure the wife wouldn't mind me barrowing a picture of the mother in law and driving around with it on my grill if it is steel. Bahahahahahaha |

Re: 65 Grill Steel or Aluminum
Yeah its steel. I don't know why I get a hair brained idea half the time.
Ok ran a magnet on it and well yeah it is. Can a "Steel" Grill and bumpers be striped and cleared? I just really dig the flatness and really would like to use what I have since well I already have them. I'd go chrome, but honestly I'm $400 shy and if I could go flat I'd be really happy. If I'm sounding like a rambling fool just say so and I'll go ramble some where else. |

Re: 65 Grill Steel or Aluminum
Just find you a aluminum one.
64-66 are the easiest to find since they were used for 3 years. Anodized is way up on the Cool factor. IMHO Its the first thing I notice on a nice 60-66. I just don't like the chrome steel grill's. :cheese:

Re: 65 Grill Steel or Aluminum
Have it chromed by a local chrome guy. Way cheaper than buying new chrome.
Or have it powdercoated? The problem with stripping and clearing, is you don't have any kind of priming agent. You can get powdercoating done in a million point two finishes. Probably less than a hundo to do the grill and headlight buckets. |
