Diff Help

Hey guys i found an axle for sale. The guys said it was a 12-bolt from a late 70's blazer with a factory locker, which I assume is a limited slip and not really a locker. can anyone look at this pic and tell me anything since i'm not real good with differentials. Thanks guys in advance. O and can i stick this whole carrier in my 64 12-bolt gears and all? not sure if the axle spline is the same...

Re: Diff Help

That is what GM called the Gov-Lock Posi unit. It's not that great of a piece. Unlike the Eaton style Posi, this uses clutches on only one side of the case, and a gear driven governor (which you see in the picture). In principle, when one wheel loses traction, the very small, breakage prone gears in the governor start spinning and the governor expands to put pressure against the clutch pack. The mos common problem these have is that one wheel will lose traction and spin the governor up too fast, engaging the clutches too violently and the whole unit literally explodes. And I mean it EXPLODES! Usually blowing apart the governor, breaking the clutches, and the cross shaft will usually rip the whole unit into two pieces. Burnouts and towing are big no-no's with these. I have replaced many of these in GM cars and trucks after they exited the diff cover.

Re: Diff Help

That looks like a govlock. I bought one and posted apic on here and was advised it was a ticking time bomb. I went with a eaton carrier. Maybe someone can confirm that.
