Distributor question- not timing- well sorta
as yall know i have been having a problem with my timing.
well i desided to check the distributor again just to see if i can see anything. wel here is what i found. when i expand the weights out and they stop on the center plate, i can move them a little more, which would be consistant with WOT, and the shaft and advance plate lift up about 1/4 of an inch it adavnces a little farther. with that i mean i can even see the ears(didnt know what else to call them) ,8 of them for 8 cylinder of coarse, lift also and also advance a little farther. here is my question, what is the messurement (play, slack etc...) that is suppose to be in there. in that i mean probably at the timing gear. it seems that if i can remove that slack it will prevent that little lift in the shaft and also stop that little bit of unwanted advance that aint suppose to be there anyways. is this fixable or is it time for a new distributor (they sure are high)

not sure of the exact measurement, but it sure isn't a 1/4". I'm thinking around 1/16" or just a tad more at most. It may be time for a distributor rebuild. What you are describing ain't good for sure. Now if this is causing your timing problem, I don't know, but it sure ain't helping anything. What about side play? Can you move the shaft from side to side any? I got a good idea, tell Santa you need a new distributor for Christmas, and throw that thing in the trash. You will have more in it before long than you can buy a brand new one for.

Just to let you know. When I was having alot of problems with my distributor I went to a local performance shop and bought a Proform HEI distributor with all new components for $149.99. The only problem to date is the module needed to be replaced.
I know Proform isnt the best brand, but this distributor is a reasonable replacement.

man i got about 200.00 in this one wit the HYPERTECH COIL , MSD MODULE, and the new pick up inside.

Jegs and Summit sell a dist drive gear spacer kit for about $10.00. Installation of the kit takes excess slack out of the dist drive. That might help your dist.
