Exclamation Highliner w/ built in speakers (from lmc)

I'm looking for alternatives to destroying my doors in my GMC for speaker placement.
When I owned my 67 C-10, I had the High Output "Kick-Panel" speakers, along with 5 1/4" in the doors.
I was not happy with the sound.
The Speaker placement was too low and between that and my Hearing Problems, the sound was Distant/Muddy.
So when I got my LMC Catalog, they have a Highliner, which is a unit that goes on the Headliner and has 4 Speakers Total (2) for the Driver & Passenger right above your head. The Head unit installs up above, so your Stereo and Speakers are contained IN the Headliner.

You can see it here at:
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=105

I was wondering if anyone has installed this (or similar) and how they liked the Sound/Placement.

Roger

I talked to somebody that had and he said it was great except the speakers were no good so he swapped them out.

Re: Highliner w/ built in speakers (from lmc)

I've always wanted to go this route and put some different speakers in it. Pretty pricey though, so I'm interested if anyone has reviews about this system before I gamble on it.

How does it mount?

I'm going to assume that it's not discontinued, as it was just in their new catalog I received TODAY!

Re: Highliner w/ built in speakers (from lmc)

I know its in there.
About 4 or 5 years ago, the headliner was discontinued, but LMC never pulled it out of there catalog. This was when LMC sucked real bad, not just kinda bad.
I highly doubt it's still discontinued.... just seems odd that they quit and then re-started.

Re: Highliner w/ built in speakers (from lmc)

I had one in my 72 GMC. I liked having the sound up by my ears. I had a CD player/AM/FM unit. The speakers that came with it worked just fine for me. I think it depends on how loud you like your music.
I'm putting another one in my 72 4x4, but I'm going to put a 10CD changer behind the seat because I hate the DJ's on the radio.

Sounds like the folks that have had them like 'em. Still wondering how they're attached - I guess it would be the same as any other headliner? My roof is bare, so I don't know.

Not sure about the quality, but i'll be installing one at some point and probably will just change the speakers. Also, saw this one from Brothers...

Re: Highliner w/ built in speakers (from lmc)

I am in the same boat with non-cut doors...and I will not cut them up for speakers that is for sure.

Has anyone used the dual speaker assembly that fits in the dash where the stock one speaker was. If so, how does it sound?

There are also the speakers that are made for under the seat. They are sold in pairs and you place one under driver and the other under passenger. Again, if anyone has used these please let us know how they sound. Brothers has them for $149 in either 8" woofer or 5 1/2" woofer.

I sure wish I could find the headliners without speakers so I could just install my own instead of swapping and pay more.

I found kick panels molded for speakers so you can install your own at www.truckandCarShop.com. $69 pair. Page 42 of their catalog that I picked up.

Ive got one in mine. I got mine about 10 years ago for $110. I have upgraded the speakers and also painted it. But its worth having! Good sound and easy to install with a clean look.

Yea ole Scott saw mine and had to have one also, they were alot cheaper back then but so was everything else!
Easy to install just get a friend to help you hold it up in place and take a#2 pencil and trace the holes then drill the marked holes.
remove your mirror and sunvisors first, bring your wiring up through the gas gauge wiring, I drilled a 1/2 hole above the interior light to reach the radio!
Good luck!

I bought the dual stereo speaker for my gmc and I wasn't that impressed.
I got the headliner setup from Brothers during a sale, bought two cans of # 505 forrest green from PaintScratch to make it match the cab. Like others have said, the speaker quality isn't that great, but I do like it

If you don't want to cut the doors, these are the best looking kick panel/speaker set up I've seen (short of fully custom):

Re: Highliner w/ built in speakers (from lmc)

I did not want to put the speakers in my doors. The reason. A lot of work. So I put then under the seat. Real stupid thing to do. So I put Pioneer 6x9 270 watt speakers in the doors. They sound great. I cut the door panel to go around the speaker. Not installed yet. Just an idea for you.

Re: Highliner w/ built in speakers (from lmc)

They are still being made. We all buy them from the same mfg. Palco Industries- Dashtop.com

http://www.dashtop.com/index.php/pro...ll-size-pickup

we sell them for a little less however

Maybe LMC just quit selling them for a while

I know this is an old thread I am bringing back from the dead but knowing how to use the search function this is the best thread to post this in..

I still have not seen any pics of this piece being installed, towards the front it looks like the Visor Pad Brackets are being utilized...

How does the wiring for the stereo get ran to the opening? Do you have to drill through the "ceiling"?

I kept searching through the threads and found this one, no wiring showing so I am guessing you can use the same route that the Dome light uses...
