gen 3 in 55-57
Is the gen 3 motor, compatible with the 55-57. Has anyone here done it, and if so, do you have any info and advice?

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
I have written articles on doing these swaps on some sites and do them for a living. Ill be starting my swap into my 58 in a few weeks. Start to finish on the swap will be about 2 weeks and it will be my daily driver. Even though this site and I don't get along I may make a build thread if the site Nazis allow it.

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
Hey Z. Can you give us any details to kick off this swap? I can see it's a 58 GMC, but the front clip is from something else. I'm guessing camaro. Are the engine mounts the same as ones used for the stock chassis? Any issues with oil pan clearances? Is that a 5.3? Sorry for so many questions, but inquiring mind need to know.

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
The front stub on mine is a 75 Nova. The motor mount stands are up pretty high so the truck pan on mine is even with the crossmember, which is good cause I will have the truck sitting low someday. The truck is actually a 59 GMC, not a 58...like I said, I just got it yesterday. It's outside getting rained on now, which is super since some if it is bare metal.

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
The 5.3 oil pan does hang too low for me (I have a mustang 2 IFS). You can use the 5.7 oil pan, wingtray, and pickup tube. Its just that easy.

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
Today I'm going to look at a 5.3 for sale. The guy says it has 21,000 on it "i find it hard to believe" but he also says it runs. It's suppose to be a 2001 5.3, but, is the dished pistons in a 5.3 vs flat top pistons in te 4.8 a for sure way to tell the difference?

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
Bump.. I have the 5.3 now, planning on how to make it work. I started making the motor mount adapters out of 1/2 plate (all I had). I have a 59 and I was thinking about fabbing my own fuel tank (aluminum or stainless) and am not sure what type of mechanics I'l need in the the tank. Im trying to be as tight with the budget as possible. Ive herd alot about Walbro inline pumps, cheapest route? What type of sending unit could I use? Fuel filters? lines? fittings? Junkyard parts are a plus in my book Any advice would be great

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
Hey Hotrodrookie,
Go back to the donor truck and carefully remove plastic fuel lines. I used the plastic lines from the Impala SS donor for my truck and it saved me lots of extra work, they hook up to the fuel rail and filter properly and when you buy your Walbro 255 fuel pump you can get the proper fitting there too. Mine came in 3 separate pieces and after using 2 of them I only had about 12" extra to secure at the tank (between the rails under the bed). |

Re: gen 3 in 55-57
Ya, unfortunetly there is no donor car. Maybe i could check for some lines at the yard though.
Anyone have info on the corvette fuel filters? Do they make it so you just run a return line to the filter instead of going all the way back to the tank? |
