Newbie with 72 Blazer
Well, its been a long time watching and thought it was about time to dive in. I have a 1972 K5 4x4 Blazer with a 383 stroker, SM465, NP205, D44/12bolt. This has been a dream truck since birth due to father who has a 1975 Blazer. I am in the middle of a mild resto taking it one slow step at a time since this is my first. Here are some before and current pics.

Looks like an awesome project!!
I like your wooden dolly for the tub. Do you happen to have the dimensions for it that you'd be willing to share??

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
Thanks all for the welcome. I put her in the Pleasanton show once last year and that's what made me want to tear her down and fix her up. I should be picking the frame up this Thursday from powdercoating. I am in the process of painting the axles and springs and other misc parts now with POR15.
The goal is to drive her in our wedding this Sept. but i still have a lot that I want to do (shave firewall(still debating), paint and repair top, interior needs work, etc) Wasted Income - I do have dimensions for by body cart and will post later today.

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
Sounds like it will be better than new!
I work in P-town, my buddies out at Pacific Fab in Morgan Hill have a booth setup during the P-town car shows. They can do anything to any vehicle so if you ever need custome fabrication they are Top Shelf in my book! Keep the pics flowing as you get closer to your 'big day'! Hey, do you know what the number one birth control is? . . . . .. . .. . . . Wedding Cake! Ok too much for me today....

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
Cool dolly! Will definitely be interested in your specs on it as I am almost ready to take the body off the frame.
Did you leave the doors on when you took the body off? I'm located in Castro Valley (Hayward) and am tearing down my '71 right now - guess we got some local guys (Newark, San Ramon, Modesto/P-town) |

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
I agree with most of the guys when I say that was one clean Blazer to tear apart. I know I've been dying to drive mine, and i've owned it for two years. Anyways, welcome to the board. Hope to see more pics soon. Mario

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
Yeah the PO took great care of her, which helps a lot and that's why I bought her. But there were some things that I wanted to change/fix/customize to make her mine own.
Here is a pic of the dolly, I am still looking for dimensions. Also a pic of the body coming of the frame. (with doors on) And yes I am dying to drive her again. But at the same time I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, just hoping its not a train.... Has anyone shaved their firewall? any suggestions (pros/cons) I am thinking of completely shaving it, heater core to vintage air, brake booster to frame mounted, under body style with hydroboost (pending room with standard trans linkage)

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
Great start for a rebuild. Not many in that good of condition anymore.
I like that lift idea. Ya don't have to buy as much beer with that one. Getting 6 buddies to come over at the same time and expend effort usualy requires beer. Those are great pics. When posting them could you stack them instead of running them together? I use Opera for a browser and can fit to width but it makes the pics small. Otherwise you have to scroll back and forth. For posting pics I post em this way. It doesn't go off screen when posting em this way. Looks like yer having fun.

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
whoa where did you get that lift? I need to get my hands on one of those...
Do you know what it's rated at weight-wise? I may leave the top on as well if that lift can take it. |

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
I'll just ask one more time just in case anyone knows - is it possible to rent a lift like that?
Also did you happen to get the dolly measurements? |

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
"Seventy One" - sorry for the wait. I dont know if you can rent these high lifts. I borrowed those from work. The maker is "Vermette Machine Co." out of Hammond Indiana. The model was 512A that has a 500LBS max limit. Hope that helps a little.
Also the dimensions are 53"Wx76"L. The front of the dolly has a height of 18-1/2" and the rear of the dolly has a height of 30-1/4". I used 4" casters rated at 350LBS each from Harbor Freight. Looking back i should have used the 6" caster to make rolling the body around a lot easier. overall the dolly cost a little under 100 bucks (casters most expensive piece) The Frame came out great. I am (slowly) finishing up painting the axles and since im in there i am changing wheel and spindal bearings and seals. One thing always seems to lead to another and another.

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
Just to let anyone interested know the body dolly shown here works GREAT for anyone doing a frame off.
Maybe the specs should be put in a place where they are easily accessible? Thanks again Classic383! |

Re: Newbie with 72 Blazer
So your front, center 4x4's are 20" and your rears are 31.5" tall, correct? And what do you mean when you say,
"In the pic you can see the front "pads" that the rocker boxes would sit on - I ended up removing those and keeping the middle and coffee pad and now the body sits on all 6 points." Did you take the 2x4 blocks out of just the front, or front and center? |
