Re: Affordable White walls

Don't fall victim to the Ebay white wall paint. I had bad luck with it. I've also talked first hand to people who have done the paint and not one positive thing yet. Out of all the painted white walls I've seen in person lately, mine looked the best, and were far from nice. I've heard mixed results from Porta walls (I've never ran them). I'd go with porta walls before paint any day. What size rim are you gonna run?

Re: Affordable White walls

Nothing too extreme. I'm thinking something like 205/75/15 for front and possibly 235 or 255/75/15 for rear. Depends on what I can fit.

The porta walls look pretty interesting, I think I may give that a shot, I read where they recommend using shoe goo when you install, seems practical.

Any other opinions?

Re: Affordable White walls

Oh, I gave you tire size instead of rim...

rims will be 15x 7 on front and 15x 8 on rear

Re: Affordable White walls

Port-a-wall work better on a higher profile tire. On the front you will notice a flex in the port-a-wall from the extra weight causing the radial tire to buldge more. The rears stand up a lot better as less weight on the tire less buldge which means less flex of the white port-a-wall. I ran them for 2 summers and fooled many people with them. You will find any raised lettering on the tire will bleed thru onto the white wall. I installed another set on the rear and went with true wide whites for the front.

Re: Affordable White walls

They were the widest I could find. Might have even been 3". The guy from lucas tire (linkngolf) is who I bought them from on Ebay. At present he has none listed. They are in California and Ohio I believe.

Re: Affordable White walls

Finally got the shockwaves in the front. Had to remount the swaybar to clear them. Still have to mount another tank and gauges to handle the front end.

Re: Affordable White walls

what about using cut or buffed white walls tires.
i do not own any so can not give any insight but i know there is a place that is near me that will cut all 4 tires for $60. i believe anything with a skinny white wall can be cut to a wider one.
anyone with first hand first hand experience? are they hard to upkeep?
this truck has the cut whites!

Re: Affordable White walls

I heard and looked into the cut whites a little bit. The fact that you have a place near you that does them is pretty sweet, that's probably a california luxury though, nearest place to me that I could possibly even MAYBE find anyone to do it would probably be atlanta, but I may be wrong.

Ive seen the "do it yourself" videos on it too, and it seems super easy to screw up.

To get the lines straight you really need a machine set up to do it , some kind of "tire lathe".

It seems like an option to consider, I would just imagine that the rubber would be more rough and harder to keep clean.... but that is all speculation.

Re: Affordable White walls

I was in your boat too. I surrendered to the fact that I did not want to pay for the Coker WW's and I didnt really want to grind on a new pair of tires either... I ended up buying regular radial black walls.

Keep searching though... you might find some!

Re: Affordable White walls

I had to pony up for a set of Diamondbacks at $900-something plus shipping back and again because I screwed up the size. Entourageguy's porto walls look great! I probably should have just done this:

Re: Affordable White walls

yea i've seen that video. it just looks kind of sloppy around the outer edge when he finishes.

i'd like to see some on a truck or car when they are all done and cleaned up and see how they look then.

i've heard bad things about the port-a-walls---i guess it's hit and miss.

i looked at some BFG 255-70-15 at about $235 or $240 each not counting shipping. ouch!

Re: Affordable White walls

I've done this with a raised white letter tire, works ok if you're looking for a cheap way to do it. I'll try to take a pic or two. Didn't know there was a video about it until just now but that's pretty much how I did it except with a flap disc on a grinder.

Re: Affordable White walls

If your in Cali, Carroll's tire warehouse in Porterville will buff them out for you. I've used them in the past on about 2-3 sets of tires. I'll use them again soon for my '59. They might ship them to you????

Re: Affordable White walls

I had a funny, most embarassing moment of my young life due to Port a walls. I worked at a Sears when I was 16 in the tire center sending tires up from the basment to the guys on the floor. Being broke ($1.30 per hour) I finally saved up enough for my Porta walls and 4 used tires (bigs and littles). The big night came and they were put on and all nice and white and I was sooo proud. After work I cruised up to McDonalds to show off my new look and my buddies were laughing at me. What's the problem with you? They pointed out my new white walls were falling off!! The installer lubed up the rim and tires and had not cleaned the lube off so they just slid out. I had to drive home at 25 MPH and get them fixed the next day. The good news was after a few days you couldn't tell they were fakes. I'll get over that night some day. (I'm 62)

Re: Affordable White walls

Simple if you want the tire to look cheap or spend the money and do it right.. heres a link where I purchased mine and yes I paid the 200.00 each for the rear 265/60 R15 on 10-inch rims and 180 on the front on 8-inch rims

Re: Affordable White walls

I ground mine, they turned out surprisingly good so I made a video and placed it on YouTube(Danielwetpaint).
It saves money on a daily driver but a show ride needs Real WWW's..
I tried the tire paint off eBay, it lasted about 2 years and then needed retouching. When I went to repaint, it reactivated the old paint and it lifted some. Not bad but it blew off at the carwash.
So now I'm going to flip the rubber on my 48 Chevy and grind them. I use a regular D/A Sander that's locked to spin not orbit. The sandpaper I use is 60/80 grit. It takes about 15 minutes to do each tire.
