Leaving the ignition on causes no spark?

Our '57 Chevy has a 235 with the points set-up, well, anyway I moved it late one night and forgot to turn the key to the off position, and unfortunately left it on over night. No spark the next day. Haven't done any work to it sonce then..... but now I want to drive it. What happened? Did the points just get burned?

If this helps you guys, let's pretend this is a 1960 chevy truck, so it is appropriate in this forum

Should just be the points burned. Replace or file whichever route you prefer.

points got burned, try using a nail file or piece of sand paper to clean them up, use a matchbook cover to re-gap 'em, and if it still won't go, they are too burned, so just replace them.

yea man sounds like your points are burned up...ive done the same on my 64. it does this bc there is constant power running to them...it burns them...i tried filing mine but it didnt help...it may be different for you but hay if filing dont work they dont cost that much...i thank my set was like 5 bucks...and dont forget to set them back right...that will cause them to burn too

Re: Leaving the ignition on causes no spark?

I replaced the coil, circuit breaker, condenser and points, and gapped them tonight. It still has no spark.

I guess the test light comes out now!

Re: Leaving the ignition on causes no spark?

the voltage relay(?)-the 2X3 square box that the harness hooks into under the hood might be burned up as well, I think that was a problem I had with my modelT (55 chev wiring harness), seemed to remember no spark/wouldn't run, and then a burnt up ignition switch....
changed al that and it worked again.
there are some sort of points/breakers inside that box that might have burned up as well.
before any thing, double check that you got the pionts installed in the right spot, and that they open up when they should, if you are off, I think you get no spark.

Re: Leaving the ignition on causes no spark?

57 Chevies don't have a circuit breaker in the ignition circuit.
To test the ignition, run a temporary wire from the + battery terminal to the coil + terminal. Then crank the engine. If it runs, the problem is in the wiring. To kill it,just pull the temp wire off.If it stays running, the problem is in the starting circuit or wiring.Which includes the starter solenoid, ignition switch, ballast resister and wiring.
Don't leave the +temp wire on for more than 2 minutes-It will burn the points again.

Re: Leaving the ignition on causes no spark?

use your test light. put test light on pos side coil, crank engine and see if light goes out or stays on.should stay on if not you have a bad ignition switch, light stays on then go to neg side of coil, test light on that crank engine over test light should flash on and off light stays on you have a problem with your points something not done right.
