Removing the speedo gear housing?
Is it safe to remove the gear housing attached to the tranny without draining it first? I want to check the plastic drive gears to see if they are stripped out. Thanks.

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
You will lose some fluid, but it shouldn't be too bad. If you can lift the rear of the truck up, that will help.

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
So I just remove the retainer and unbolt using the nut in the middle?

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
OK, i have everything ready to go back in, one question though. How do I make sure I get the driver gear seated correctly onto the drive gear?

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
It really can't go anywhere else. You may have to turn the driven gear a little to mesh them. If they are not meshed, the gear housing will not fully seat.

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
I think I might be missing something. The last pic is the cable end. Its just a square shape, but the housing end has a key shape hole. Am I missing a part??

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
The piece that is still in the gear housing goes to that adapter (that makes the 90 degree turn). Should be a key on that pin. If not, pull the pin out, and connect the cable directly to the gear housing. If it works, the key on the pin has sheared, and the 90 degree adapter is your culprit.

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
ok, now I'm stumped on the 90 degree adapter thing. the adapter works fine if I use a screw driver to turn one side, the other side turns easily. I know the speedo is hooked up good to the gauge, because when I turn it by hand the gauge moves. But when I attached the adapter to the speedo cable and use the key from the drive gear to turn the other side of the adapter, nothing moves on the gauge. So, something is not working in the 90 deg. adapter, and there is no way to take it apart that I can see. A new adapter online is just under $100..

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
Any ideas? Why would a screwdriver turn the 90 deg. thingy but the speedo cable won't?? Is there a key-shaped adapter for the end of the cable? Never seen one, but who knows?

Re: Removing the speedo gear housing?
My guess is that something stripped in that adapter. If your cable will not reach, get a longer cable and pitch the adapter. Those aren't all that common.
