Does anyone have any pictures of how they installed their cable x speedo converter. I have read that for it to work best it needs to be installed under hood for a more direct angle of the cable itself. To do this it would need a shorter length ordered rather than the standard 36". What length are you guys using to mount under hood? Any info would be great.

i was about to post up the same thing you did i was wanting to run a cable x box so that i can use my factory gauges on a 4l60e transmission.

I run one, don't have any pictures tho cause the box is mounted under the dash & behind the vintage air unit on the passenger side. It uses a standard speedo cable & cant take sharp bends, just like any cable instl. It works good but has a little needle bounce below 15MPH. Also has slight hum sound, it is an electric motor. No complaints, but I am thinking about having Classic Instruments mod my stock speedo to electronic guts when I get some money saved up. (cost is over a thou!!)

Thanks for the info Kid. I heard that if you mount the cable x in the engine compartment in sealed box(not rated for exposure to water and weather) it gets rid of the noise and that by using a direct path and shorter cable it help with the needle jumping at low speeds.

over a grand to mod a stock speedo, you could get the tailshaft that accomidtes eletronic and has provisions for a speedo cable.
i was going to try to mod an s-10 speedo into the factory speedo.

I would switch out tailshaft but don't have that option with my NV3500 5 speed. Does anyone have information on the S-10 speedo conversion? I have heard people say it is a possibility but have not heard of some one actually finishing the conversion. With the S-10 speedo is there a way to calibrate for gearing to dial in correct MPH reading?

I was thinking about mounting it something like this but possibly in a waterproof box. So the cable goes in at a straight shot the same pathway as the original.

To Its70 do you have other pics of how you mounted your clutch master from the inside?

It might look better to place it on the inside of the fender, next to the windshield wiper bottle. Or if the cable is long enough, down where my marker light use to be before I shaved it. In that spot it would not be seen at all and I could just run the cable along the top of the inner fender.

For the cable x to work the best as possible they say it is best to have as straight an angle from the converter to the back of the speedo as possible. When I talked to the folks at Abbott(dealer of the Cable x) about my concerns with performance they said on our trucks it may be best to mount under hood to eliminate as much bend in the cable as possible but in this location it would have to be sealed off from water. They suggested siliconing the holes into the cable x housing at the calibration knobs.

I thought a water proof box would be a better Idea.I want to find a water tight box that will fit over the 4-3/4” long x 3-5/8” wide x 2-2/4” Tall cable x housing. If I can find something like this in the right size I think I will be in business. Drill two holes, one small hole for the wires to come out through and one for the speedo cable. Then seal the holes up with silicone or special fittings that have the rubber boot for a more professional look.

Is anyone else interested or following this topic or should I let it die on out. It has become more of a list of my thoughts and findings than a discussion. But if it is helping anyone I will continue to post what Info I find on the subject from browsing other forums and email contacts. I am hoping there are more guys on here that have used this product and would give a review of how they would rate the product. Also some pictures of where and how they installed the unit. That is one of the reasons I keep the thread alive with posting so often. Let me know what you guys think.

I'm interested and following. I have two projects that could use this, so it's great for me. I am glad I read that ranger article...

I could use this on my 49 Chevy pickup with a 4.3 and 4L60E, and my next project for my dad will be a 48 Willys pickup with a 5.3 and 4L60E. I'd like to keep stock gauges for both.

it is either this box or using the parts on the 4l80 to 'turn' the cable using GM parts but for almost 2x the cost of the box.

Herron Performance is now a Cable X dealer, $315 shipped.
Will come with the 30 slot unit, which Abbot says has eliminated the slow/jumpy response at low speeds.

ive got the s-10 speedo mounted in my stock dash, i guess ill know if it works in a week or so. dont worry i took alot of pics.

hell the s-10 circuit is even labled, 0-100 same angles, simple to modfy (get rid of trip meter), easy to roll back odometer, and even kinda fits nicely.
$40 for speedo
$10 for epoxy!
aprox 8 hours slowly removing speedo and installing in c-10 dash

ill post a how to when i get it working.... IF i get it working. hopefully i didnt just ruin a nice factory tach dash!

Texas 68, What length of cable did you get? That is one of the areas I might be placing mine. Do you think the unit would do alright next to the wiper fluid bottle mounted on the fender?

Shon, it is good to hear they worked out that bug. That is one of the reasons I have been holding off so long in ordering. does the 30 slot mean the unit has more teeth on its gears?

brad_man_72, I look forward to see your pictures and hearing how it performs. How do you plan on dialing in the MPH?
