OMG What Did I DO!!!

Oh yeah.. I bought a 66 Chevy truck today. Paid $500 for a rust free truck. And just so Joe can't rib me I even took pictures. Someone tried to paint the inside. I think they used a spray can and tried to spread it with a brush. It is pretty bad but nothing some sand paper and some fresh paint cant take care of. The dash was never cut either.

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

The first picture in this set is of behind the rear right wheel. The left side looks the same. You can see there is no rust in there. It almost looks like it was restored only a few years ago even. I was really suprized. I ran my hand on the inner fender to see if they were patch panels or if there was any ripples from dents but there were non. I think I did good. I believe that is only a 250 CI and not a 292 and it also has a power glide tranny in it.

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

I'd say you did good

An easy way to ID a 250 from a 292 is the 292's had offset motor mounts......as in not straight across from each other.

Did it come with the head?

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

Thats either a 230 or 250...the side covers are too short (4") for a 292.

I couldn't tell from your picture, but If it has flat top pistons with "eyebrow" reliefs for valve clearance, its probably a 230. A 250 should have 0.3 inch deep D-shaped dishes in the pistons.
The other thing you can do is measure the stroke if that lower end turns over ok. The 230 has a 3.25" stroke, the 250 at 3.53" stroke. Bore is the same on both engines, as are shared casting numbers. Either way those are great engines. I've been running a 230 for 20 years without problems, but will be "making it a large" with a 292 that is at the machinist now.

good luck, congrats on a good find!

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

That is either a 230 or a 250. If it is the original endine it is a 230.

Ooops, don't have my glasses on yet. The side covers look like they are short.I forgot it was a 66. That was the first year for a 250, which is probably what you have.

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

I do not have the head. The Head was rebuilt and is sitting at the machine shop and I think I can have it for $240. I knew it wasn't a 292 because of the motormounts. I had a feeling it was a 250. Here is another veiw of the engine.

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

Sorry, I thought my edit of the above post went thru...but not.
66 was the first year for a 250, so assuming it is the original there's not much doubt. The 250 that year would show some green under the grease. The 230 was blue.

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

It's kinda academic , ( but 20 cu.in. is 20 cu.in. )
Again, these motors appear the same, can use the same block casting #, etc, and only have 1/4 inch stroke difference.
Unless corrected, it is my understanding that the 230 used flat top pistons (mine did) and the 250 used a very large and .3 inch deep D Shaped dish, that looks like the 292 piston (they are not the same).
Lean over a little further with that camera, and....What does a piston look like?

Mine was the original motor. It was definitely green in that first year in trucks(1966). I had several dispute it, but confirmed through a GM engineer (Tom Langdon) who was at GM and worked on the 250 design that the 250 in the 66 trucks was definitely not blue.

I have a couple of pics after scraping off 80,000 miles worth of paint on mine that show the green. I'll try to post them tonight. I saw a picture from a sales brochure(from FactoryStock I think) that shows the green.

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

This one I just got might turn into a 1/2 ton. Sorry you C20 guys. I need something that will become a daily driver and work truck. More of a driver then a work truck and I know these things are tough. I am going to make it pretty but not as pretty as my 65. I am still thinking about what to do and I have time. I am also thinking of putting the suburban engine in it with TBI and 700R4 tranny. Of course disc brakes and power steering and all the other good stuff..

Too cool - love the exhaust system hanging routine!

Get that growth off the bed and slip that mattress in the nearest dumpster.

Re: OMG What Did I DO!!!

Saturday I will be going to do some work on this truck. Maybe I should go get the head from the machine shop and put it on but dropping the V8 in might be the other option seeing I don't feel like spending $250 to get the head back when I can use that money for something else, like a tranny from the pick and pull.
