Lets see your C50+ pic's!
I have found a C50 (or bigger) I am thinking about picking up. It runs and drives and is currently a hydro dump. He wants 2k for is as is or 1k for it with out the dump. I have no need for the dump and if I get it I am thinking of building a Top Kick style truck for towing. I was just given a 70 3/4T for free and it is complete with a good cab. I would take the cab and bed off the freebee and build a crew cab fleet with step side fenders grafted on to cover the rear dually tires. I think the current cab on the C50 is ok shape but needs some rust repair. I have plenty of projects and really should not even think about getting this truck but what fun would that be. I would envision a Diesel of some flavor (dodge most likely) and maybe bag it for a smooth ride but still be able to tow large loads.
Any thoughts or better yet pics of these big beasts? Kevin LFD Inc. |

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Now I was only thinking of bagging it for comfort now lowering! So much for that idea That really is bad @SS and my wifes comment when I mentioned how cool would it be to have that with my LFD logo's on the side as we roll into the show pulling a 4 door Tahoe/Vett hybrid! She just answered "yea I could see that". Now guys that is about as good of a "Go for it" as we ever get right?
If I was not dropping over 10K this weekend on 2 new shop tools I would be all over it. So we will see how funds are in a month or so Kevin LFD Inc. |

That truck will be sweet, and it will be top notch with you building it.

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Oohhhh!!! I didn't need to see that!!!!! I like it!!!
I had been pondering building a burb crew cab on a 88-93 Dodge Cummins 1 ton dually 4X4 chassis with a LWB and half of stepside fenders to clear the duals .... Now I have to rethink it all!! I know of several C40/50's for sale locally... |

As long as it's for personal use, and he's not hauling for other people, he should be ok. But, you better talk to your insurance agent just in case.

No but seriously I spoke with my agent and they said if it is not a flat or dump bed and registered as a recreational vehicle and not a commercial vehicle it should be fine but they will check into it some more and let me know. Kevin LFD Inc. |

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
So I still can not get this idea out of my head. Not right now but in a year or two I will be needing a pull vehicle for pulling a large enclosed car trailer. So I am still thinking of building my own. I did talk to my ins. company and they said it will go off the GVW of the chassis so another thought was to get the truck that I know about for 1K complete and drivable then build my own crew cab and mount it all on a 1 ton dodge dually chassis with a turbo cummins. Does anyone have any more pics of built C50's or can someone finish the photo chop above with a dually bed 67-72 style so I can see what it would look like. Or can you just talk me out of it

Kevin... Don't loose that idea... Go for it!!.. Being a fellow Automobile addict I could never try to talk you out of it... I have been pondering this kind of build for about a year, I have even starting measuring and collecting parts.. So far I have a 67 C50 cab and nose.. A 72 Burb body shell, the back half of a truck cab, long fleetside bed, 67 stepside rear fenders and a 72 Chev 157" wheelbase dually. I too plan to use a Cummins and an Automatic for power.. Originally I started watching for an Extended cab 88-93 Dodge diesel dually 4X4.. but those are still "gold" around here and in my opinion way too expensive.. (regular cab Dodge Cummins duallys are much less) I want to stay within those years for donors because of a 6BT 12 valve engine, passenger side drop 205 transfer case, and passenger side pumpkin Dana 60 front axle.. Another factor for me was the wheelbase on the extended cab Dodge is not close enough to work without frame mods... Hence I chose to use a Chev 72 157 inch dually frame (Plus it was free) and convert it to 4X4. I am still studying and searching running gear options. So far they are: find a regluar cab Dually dodge 4X4 from 88-93. (IMHO too expensive $3500-$5000).. Buy a Dually 2WD for the engine/trans and rear axle. (found several from $1500-$2000) and use a 70's vintage Dodge 4X4 remote mounted 205 transfer case (those are cheap,$100-$200) using the remote 205 and mounting it exactly in the middle between the two axles would lessen the front driveline angle and you would end up with two identical drives lines which would be good incase of a failure, then buy either a Dodge Dana 60 or 61 front axle, it appears the 61's are less $$ and are not as popular of sellers because they are 3:07 ratio, found several for $400-$500. (The 60's only go down to 3:54 ratio, on the 61 they moved the pinion gear over to accomodate the larger pinion gear of the 3:07) Or.. find an older School bus.. some have cummins engines and "baby" Allision 6 speed AT's.. Hmmmmmmmmmm so many choices/things to consider.. Oh well for now I have enough to at least get started on the body conversion and get it mounted on a chassis.. My prelimanary measurement indicate the necessity to move the burb body forward approx 7 inches from the stock location to fit the shorter front end of the C50, then cut the burb off at the rear door post and use a stock length burb 3rd door change it to a pickup curved door window frame and add a pickup cab rear section, (I want to do a 4th door, could/would you clone your Tahoe drivers side door pillar for me?).. If all of my initial measurement are okay it looks like a longhorn bed with half of a stepside fender attached with work perfectly. Here is a picture of a C50/60 that I have posted on my shop wall that I have been staring at. (along with the photoshopped crewcab C60 posted above) |

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
Go for it!!!!!!!!! I think most, if not all around here will agree that you are the best thing to happen to these trucks since the addition of factory disc brakes!
Some thing tells me this thread is going to have a cult like following

Re: Lets see your C50+ pic's!
get your self the most modern chassis that you can then but a burb body on it.
there are tons of trucks out there on craigs right now. there has been 2 64-66 c50's for months now. i almost bought a beautiful 72 c50 for 1500 from down south aways. ill just type in "truck" or $500 and see what comes up. some times it suck when you get to spicific like c50 or chevrolet or c6500. keep it simple. some other stuff to consider and ideas.... http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthrea...&highlight=lfc |
