Steering coloum help

I have a tilt coloum out of a 1978 chevy truck but I want to keep the key in the dash but want to find the piece of the coloum that does not have an ignition switch in it. Any one know where to look or who sells them?? Thanks

Re: Steering coloum help

there is a big difference between the tilt and non tilt versions of those columns, I don't think any of those models came without keys in the column.
I am planning on doing the same thing, and I know I will have to modify the housings to fit the stock column mount cause I want to keep the stock parking brake handle, and I dont want to cut up my dash. I plan on cutting off both the key boss and the shift boss, and patching them with similar metal and epoxy. I did see where one guy used the key to turn on the ignition and unlock the column, then used a pushbutton on the dash, I may consider doing that, but then I would have a different key for my doors.

Re: Steering coloum help

That's the way the Chevy and GMC vans were, with the ignition in the dash. I don't remember just when GM started putting the ignition switches on the columns in vans. Another reason why everyone wants a van tilt column for their truck. Unfortunately they are getting hard to find, and when you do find one it is usually $$$$$
