S10 swap clutch question
I have no idea how, or where even to start with this. I really don't want to cut holes in my cab without knowing anything. If anyone has pic's or detailed instructions on how they did it, that would be helpful. Ive searched and followed along with everyone's builds but I've not seen anything. Thanks guys.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
You're talking about the clutch pedal mounting, right?
You might PM sgtusmc, I know his is a stick.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Ya know, I always forget some important detail when I post a question up. Sorry. I already have the pedal mounted, it is attached to the break ass.. I'm wanting to know how to mount/install the M/C. I know there are a bunch of people that I could PM but I wanted it to be out here where everyone else could use it also.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Good Morning From Wisconsin
Guess everyone is out with there rides ,while were scratching our heads . I am still looking for ways to do the clutch and brake set up on the 49. I liked the idea of the s10 pedal assy. . I see your pedal arms that go up to the pivot point in the picture are to the left of the seering coliumn. Just asking cause I cant drop over to look at the truck .But can you sit straight or do you have tosit at a little angle? Our salvage yards around here don't hang onto trucks and cars that are much older than 10 years so my parts supply is very limited. If you have any advice on a yard or if you have anything you are intrested in parting with let me know. Sorry for asking all the questions . Thank You Chuck |

Re: S10 swap clutch question
I assume that this is the picture that you are referring to. If that's the case, I tried to center the pedal assembly to the steering column as best as I could. As for sitting a little a skew, I don't. I don't have any installation process pictures to share, but there is a support that you would bolt or weld for support under the dash, and that is what I tried to center.
As everyone can see I have the pedals mounted, I just don't know how to install the clutch M/C. Any help on the would be great. Thanks guys.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Let's back up a little, I am confused. 1. What is the pedal assembly out of? 2. Did it come with a clutch master and slave cylinders or are you looking at more traditional linkage? 3. Is the brake cylinder going to be mounted on the fire wall or frame with linkage? 4. Does the brake cylinder have a booster?
I think once we have a clear idea of what you have and are trying to accomplish we can offer some ideas.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
I'm using the pedal ass. out of an s10. It has the clutch pedal on it also, so the clutch pedal is attached to the break pedal. I'm using an s10 power booster from the same s10 that I got the pedal ass. from, and it's mounted on the firewall. I would like to use the master cylinder and slave that i have, which came with it.
I'm guess I'm bad at giving up the info that you guys would need to help me. At the same time I'm not sure of all the info that is needed for you guys to give me the answer I'm looking for. The pic that I have posted above is my pedals mounted. I'm trying to find out how and where to mount the clutch master cylinder.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Darn I had a note all set to send and it disapeered. Ok heres what I found for a master cyl. set up for the clutch. I cant find the pictures I put in favorites. But I will explain it the best I can and look for the picture again Wednesday. The clutch cyl was operated by an extended spacer that was suported fron the firewall with a rod end. Then the cyl.rod was bolted to the spacer with a shoulder bolt. This allowed the master cyl. to be positioned to the left of the booster. The master cyl. and the slave was from Jegs. It was a race car set up from the circle track section. If you want I will draw a picture and email it to you.
I like my project but it sure is a bummer when I canr find the info. I went to the yard to find a pedal set up like yours but they were diffrent. I hope I can find a system some one wants to sell. I was in mud and weeds in the rain the day I was there and the weeds had to be 3-4 ft. I will share any info I find or can get off the truck to help anyone so I guess I will continue to search for info. Chuck Last edited by Greenbushchuck; 10-06-2009 at 09:38 PM. |

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Here are a couple of threads that show different strategies. I listed the second because it shows the brake booster conflict that you may need to think about. I think the first is similar to what chuck was describing.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
If you're using the pedals, booster and master, and clutch master and slave out of the s10, why can't you mount it to your firewall exactly how it was mounted in the s10? Am I missing something? Should be a simple deal, and then you might have to make a custom hard line or braided line to go from your clutch master to slave. Just make sure if you have to do some parts swapping, that the bore of the master and the bore of the slave have to be the same.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
I appreciate the help, but I'm really wanting to use the s10 stuff. It's what I have and I can't afford to go out and get that fancy new stuff. Right now I'm on a no budget build, so I'm working with what I've got.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
What year is the s 10 brake and clutch assy from . There has to be a way to make that work. Can you take any pictures ? So I can se what you have under the dash area and the drivers side of the firewall.
I need this figured out as much as you do. So lets work together on this. |

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Where are you mounting the brake MC and booster? That needs the straightest shaft between the brake pedel arm and booster if mounted on the fire wall. Is the brake and clutch mounted together (on one bracket or attachment to the firewall) or are they separate units. If you look at the second thread I posted the guy determined where the brake booster needed to go, then how much room he needed for the clutch MC to work. Use a small square to tranfer a mark from the brake pedel to the firewall. measure from a reference point (existing screw or bolt hole on firewall there are plenty) and transfer the mark to the firewall side. you now know where the shaft for the brake cylinder needs to go. Trial mount your booster (or just the bracket to start with) then start looking for the location for the clutch MC. Set it, make a mark for the shaft thru the firewall, transfer that to the inside and see where it aligns with the clutch arm. Look at the first link in my previous post and you will see how the guy offset the arm on his. Take note of where your plumbing lines will need to go so you can get to them if you ever have to remove either MC. You may need to build some cardboard templates (if you look at my thread you will see I'm a big fan of cardboard mockups) and fab some brackets. Once you get the placement right we can talk about how to build the shafts between the pedels and MC's. Sometimes you just need to dive in and obvious solutions present themselves.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Here is a pic of my booster mounted. It's the only one I have right now, I'm not at my computer so I can't get into my folder with more of my install pix of the pedal ass. The clutch pedal is part of the break pedal ass. they are together.
I can't mount it the same as the s10 because I don't think that I have a flat surface to mount it to. From what I can tell the cylinder might end up being at the bend in the toe board to the firewall. Might I have messed up on mounting the booster and ass.? Maybe to low? But the location/pedal height works for me when I'm sitting on my seat. I'm not sure of the year that the ass. came out of, I got it at the pull-a-part. I'm fairly certain that it was pre '94. I will try to get some more pix later tonight. let me know what else you guys might need to help. Thanks for your patients with me.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
Still doesn't sound like that big of a deal. You may need to make a flat surface for it to mount to if it ends up being down at the bend. You could make a few cuts on the sloped section, bend it out until it's flat with the vertical section of the firewall, and then just weld in filler pieces to close it back in.
If your pedal height is good on the inside, don't change it. You don't want to make it uncomfortable or unsafe just because it doesn't mount on the firewall like you want it.

Re: S10 swap clutch question
It looks like if you put the clutch MC to the outside of the brake booster you can use an offset at the clutch like the photo below of this guys brake assy.
