TPI and high lift cams
I love the throttle response of fuel injection and would like to see if I could put in on a large SBC engine. The camshaft is the old Crane Cam Saturday Night Special solid tappet.
If I do go this route how difficult is the injector wiring? there is a guy on Craigs list that has all this stuff that I would need! Quote:

I think you're going to have problems getting a TPI to work properly with a big cam like that. Especially since it is a solid lifter, it will be setting off the knock sensor all the time.
My son and I put a TPI on a mild SBC400 a few years ago, and after 12+ chips from a company that specializes in TPI, we gave up and went back to a carb.

they simply dont flow near enough air and especially do not like big cams. you can spend 2 grand on an aftermarket intake setup but by the time you buy the injectors computer and other parts needed to get it to run right you could have built another engine.the tpi setup was orginally designed for a 305 and did great but once you add a bunch of cubic inches and a big cam etc it just cant handle it.

You will eat parts cams lifters if you throw it in,you can make it work but need alot of research

Okay then what camshaft will work that will make 425-450 horsepower at the rear wheels?
If not then I will stay with a carb. I just love the throttle response of a TPI setup!

if your willing to lose 150 or so horsepower off what you want the tpi will work great but it doesnt have a fighting chance at supporting that kind of horsepower.theres no reason a carb cant have instant throttle response.once you get into a big cams and heads and what not your not going to have crisp great low rpm response. its a vaccum issue with the engine and parts designed to not make power until 3k rpm or more. the injection wont change it. making the combo work together is the key. if you dont think carbs have good throttle response come to baltimore and i will take you for a ride in my truck . its all about tuning

If you want to read up on TPI and what it takes to make power. Go to thirdgen.org and check out the TPI section and So-Cal section. There are a couple guys in socal who have some well tuned and highly modded TPI set ups. They run 12's with them but make less then 400 HP at the wheels. These guys have tons on time in these set ups. Hours and hours of tuning and re-tuning. They also have to meet California smog laws so there is the handicap of having to use CARB approved parts. Long story short stick with a well tuned carb and save a TON of money and headaches. A wide band O2 sensor will go a long way towards tuning.

If you really like TPI, look in to a Holley Stealth Ram. It's not smog legal as it has no provision for EGR. But it will feed a healthy small block to over 6000 RPM. It can be used with a GM ECM or the Holley ECM.
