Place some thing on your bed rails to protect your paint, (I'm assuming your crew cab is a nice truck) be it wood or rubber or what ever, and then flit the bed onto your truck, rail to rail, and some large C - clamps to secure them together. Who cares if it sticks out a couple feet. Just tie a red rag onto the end of it.
That's what I'd do if a traler is out of the question.

Yep andy beat me to it. That is how i do it. When ever you stop for gas, food, pee, what ever I would crawl under and check you clamps. Didn't a board member just loose a cab on the high way?

If your new bed has lights on it how about wiring them into a trailer plug and plugging them in if you have trailer electrics rigged on the "underneath" truck. At least then nobody could complain that they couldn't see the overhang!

The other thing that works well, is if the bed you are hauling is the same as the one on your truck, put something like peices of wood in the stake pockets, and they will go into the other bed too and keep it from sliding. That doesn't really answer your question, but sometimes that will work.

Oh man chevy fatman isn't the guy that was just asking last week about bringing a cab home strapped down versus bolted down was he???

Did it destroy the cab or was he going pretty slow??? Geez, I hate to hear that stuff...

A buddy of mine brought one from Florida to Maryland with no probs. He did the same thing, flipped it upside down on top of his bed and used heavy duty tie-downs all over it.

Hey, I'll be hauling an 8' bed to DeKalb in the next few weeks. I made my trailer wider to hold it. Would you like to borrow the trailer ?

Yes, that was me, I wasn't even going that fast, it was the wind blowing really hard what contributed to the cab getting blown off the frame, cab was useless after that, had to ditch it, there's no such thing as TOO MANY STRAPS!! the more the better, take my word for it

Now I guess I'll have to fix my other pos cab I have, fun, fun

Oh man that sucks. Was there much traffic? When you left Columbus did you by any chance take rt. 62 east?

actually I think it was rush hour, around 2 p.m. I lost the cab somewhere in rt. 85 right after I picked it up in Shorewood Il.

I don't really remember what route I took out of Columbus, my cousin was the one telling me what roads to take

flag

You only have to flag an overlength item if it is longer than 4 feet according to the DOT

One other safety thing. I know our vintage doesn't have the removable tailgates.... but I wouls seriously consider removing the tailgate during transport if it is upside down on the back of your truck. There was a death just a few years ago in MN where a tailgate dropped off a bed during transport. It bounced into the windshield of the car following on the freeway and the driver didn't live.

Not as long as yours, but gives you an idea. Definitely secure it better than what mine is at the moment. I had alreay unstrapped a few things at the time I took the picture.

Oh yeah, going that far I would put somethine like a heavy tarp or blanket over the front of the bed your carring so it and keep it close to your cab. Too much gap will push the bed back. Blanket saves your cab.

if you are hauling the same kind of bed as what is on your truck, the wood in the stake pockets will keep it from hitting the back on the cab. I hauled one on mine, and I just did the wood in the stake pocket thing, and lots of rope and rachet straps, and it was find for the 45 minutes home on the freeway.

Wow, no kidding! I thought I was the only one left here in IL. Hey 72bigblock, I will be shopping at Woodman's tomorrow. A guy I work with that lives in Marengo, goes there and likes it quite a bit. So, I'm gonna go check it out.
