348 motor swap?
Anybody swapped a 348/409 motor into their SBC equipped truck? I've got a decent running crate 350 in mine, but a friend wants to swap a fresh 348 for an ATV I have. Always been a fan of the ugly W motor... so I'm thinking it would be a cool little swap. All motor / tranny stuff shouldn't be a problem... what about mounts, etc? My 62 still has the old-school front mount and the bell housing mount.
Thanks in advance Bob Last edited by bob-n; 11-04-2009 at 03:05 PM. |

Re: 348 motor swap?
I am not sure about the 62 but on a 63-66 truck, you would need big block perches/mounts I believe, and the frame would have to be narrowed for them. If you look at a 67-72 frame, the frame is narrowed right at the motor perch bolt holes, it actually runs about 8" before and after. If you changed to a modern fuel injected 4.8/5.3/6.0 it would be the same thing so the headers/ex-manifolds would work.

Re: 348 motor swap?
I say go for it. That is a swap I have always wanted to do. A Big window 62-63 shortbed with a W-motor.

Re: 348 motor swap?
Hmmm... mounts are easy... have welder, will travel!
I read that the center dump manifolds between W motor and SBC drop exhaust in exactly the same place, so that is easy. Tough decision. |

Re: 348 motor swap?
do it, mounts are probably similar to the sbc/bbc side mount, issues would be where does the manifold dump?, would it dump right into the frame rail?, fenderwell headers would cure that if that is a problem!
also you might need to bang the firewall out a little bit, then again maybe not. here are some pics of a 409 in a big truck, I think they sit a little lower in a big truck...

Re: 348 motor swap?
My Dad had a sweet running 283 in his 59 long bed Fleetside when I was growing up. He swapped in a 348 and that truck screamed....at least to my then-little boy senses.
I have a swwet spot for a 348/409. If I could have one I would instead of a perfectly fine, but run-of-the-mill 350 SBC |
