new exhaust setup?

okay, when i get my shortie headers, i'm thinking of replacing my flowmasters, well, getting rid of them

i'm thinking about running open dual pipes out the back with another H pipe. i'm sure i could use my current pipes if i just modified the part with the muffler on it.

what do ya'll think?!

nother question. no matter what i do, i'm gonna need to drive my truck down to the shop to get the exhaust fixed for the shorties.

will it be safe to run my truck with the shorties or will it overheat the tranny or anything? i dont have a tranny cooler either.

oh yeah, i'm probably gonna end up getting the same headers that ryan has, the ones made for a chevelle

dood that loud sound will get old fast. but you might as well try it. i think everyone does at one point or another, and then i gets old after about a week. i ran headers to duals that shot out at 45 degree angle before the rear tires with no mufflers or anything. that was on my '64 and it was loud as hell. i did it for 2 months and after scaring a few old ladies it got old and i bought some cheapie flowtechs or something that they had at pepboys to quite it down.

anyway, you will be fine if you just drive straight to the exhaust shop with the headers. i did about 15 miles to the exhaust shop. but don't go cruzing around even though its tempting, cause you will heat your tranny up.

but really, its loud as hell. i would get mufflers if i were you.

Go for an X pipe But I would get aeros for sure. I drove 20+ miles from the pasture to the muffler shop with the open headers and that drove me nuts. Yes it was great but damn it got anoying and too loud.

BTW: No offense taken Mike

Good question about driving to the shop with headers on. I plan to buy and install the headers and Y-Pipe myself. Then if need be drive it down to a shop to get the rest put on. If I can buy or get bent pipe that will work, Ill probly did it myself. Heres the other thing. After I get the headers and Y-Pipe on and I have the truck running. Do I need to adjust the carb? Is it cool to drive to the shop. Then after the shop take it home and tune it or take it to a performance shop and have them tune it? What you guys think?

Eddie,

I think you will be OK. Especailly with the y-pipe. I would just stick everything on and drive. If any tuning is needed, wait until after it's all done.

Hey, you have the 1904 Q-jet. I know a guy who has modded his for more power, and it works great, according to him. He has a article somewhere on how to do it too.

Oh, you going with 3" stuff? If so, don't use the reducer that comes with the y-pipe. Just get the shop to add a piece of 3" pipe to it.

I live on a major street. I HATE people who drive without any sort of mufflers. Think about the effect it has on others when you haul butt behind my house at 2:00 a.m.

A good performance muffler sounds better than an open pipe anyway...
