I've got this whining noise coming from the drive train. Cruising at 65, a steady whine. Cruising and then shift to neutral, it stops.... I was kinda thinking it could be coming from the rear end, but would it stop in neutral?? Any help would be appreciated guys.....thanks.

if you rev the motor in park do you still hear the noise? can you pinpoint the location of the noise?

No its doesnt do it in park.... Its coming from under the truck. Trans or the rear. I thought it might be the wheel bearings, but wouldnt it do it in neutral too?

yep. it's the tranny. the rear end would make noise when in neutral if it was the culprit. Did you check the oil/fluid level?

Defiantly the trans. and i agree. check fluid levels.

I checked it not to long ago, I'll check it in the morning.... I havent noticed any leaks in the drive.

It's not necessarily true that if you put it in neutral that if the whine stops it's not the rear end. If you put it in neutral it unloads the rear end gears which will stop the whine. It could still be something else though. Just my .02.

If you want whine, try running a set of 4.56 gears in these trucks. They'll get you an economical 10 MPG. And if you listen real close, you can hear your wallet whining too!

Could be the pinion bearings. When you put it in neutral you unload them and the noise will reside. Also if it was rebuilt and the pinion preload wasn't set properly, the crush collar will loosen up and unload the bearings causing the same type noise and problem. Check the yoke any play in-out up down etc. is no good. Drive at a steady speed and moderate throttle make note of the noise and then get of the throttle quickly. If the noise lessens or goes away it's the pinion bearings. Hope this helps Jay

I got that beat... Try it with a 4 speed, and Rockwell T-221 xfer case, and 4.57 gears!

My bet would be the rear end. I let one get low on gear oil and it started doing the same thing. Filling it back up won't solve it either. Once it starts it will keep doing it until you rebuild it.
