Whats this rear end??
Hope fully this will put my mind to ease that I dont have an Eaton. It looks to me like I have a Dana 60 but let me know if I am wrong. Also were the Dana 60s available with 4.56 gears? Thanks

I am looking to get a posi as well and I dont know what to get. I dont think Eaton makes a posi for it because that is what I wanted. The only ones I have seen are the ARB Air Lockers, Detroit Lockers, and Power-Lock.

Theyve been around for 40 years. Theres a couple of factory Dana 60 posi carriers . Power lock is one of them. Detroit lockers are common as well. Its probably the most common rear end to have limited slip carriers in the junkyard. Look under 3/4 ton Fords or 3/4 ton Dodges. Some chevies like mine came with them but GM mostly stuck with Eatons or 12 bolts in their stuff. Theyre good tough rear ends with a strong aftermarket and factory parts assortment. I wouldnt go out and buy a new limited slip carrier though. The power locks are tough sons of beeyatchs and will take a lot of miles and abuse. Ive used several in different projects over the years and have never paid more than $125 for a complete axle to axle Dana 60 with power lock unit from either the junkyard or private sales out of the paper. I did pay $400 for one once from a friend but only because it was set up as a semi floater with 5 lugs already and it was originally out of a 69 Plymouth roadrunner so the brakes didnt even need to be substantially modified to fit under the 67 Camaro it ended up underneath.
I know the local junkyard has half a dozen power lock Dana 60's and thats just the ones I know of. Thats where I got my Detroit locker unit thats in the Dana in my truck for the princely sum of $75. Also check ebay. Ive bought and sold a few Dana 60 posi carriers for about $125 a pop on there back before I got fed up with Ebay.

Oh and another thing. Make sure you get a posi carrier with 30 splines. Some of them are 35 spline carriers and will not work with your axles unless you change gears in the carrier unless you feel like changing over to 35 spline axles in your rear end. Not a bad idea in and of itself.

mikep, aren't the 35 spline axles actually larger in diameter v. the 30 spline units something like 1.5" v. 1.31". I know Chevy Vans came with dually dana60s in the 70s and had 1.5" axles. I believe there was a company selling all the piece to "open up" the spindle to accept the larger axles. Mine also came stock with 4.10s and the powr-loc. I like the powr-loc and would like to get one for my front dana44... one day...

How right you are sir. The 35 spline are quite a bit larger in diameter. You can convert 30 spline to 35 by changing out the side gears and the axles but you have to have a LOT of power on tap with a manual tranny to make it worthwhile. adding unsprung weight for the hell of it isnt a good idea in most cases.
