454 standard deck versus tall deck

hey guys what are the pros and cons of a tall deck 454? will heads for a standard deck fit? i know the intake manifold would be designated for a tall deck, are strokers rods off the shelf available for it. basically a c-10 i might buy may have a tall deck bb its a 468 currently and id maybe like to build a nice 496 out of it but since the deck is .400 taller would you use a rod a bit longer than the 6.385 or make up the difference with more compression height on the piston? HHEELLPPP hahah

There's nothing wrong with a talldeck. You make can make up the height with a longer rod/ custom piston.

The 496 kit from eagle is for a low deck AND it comes with a 6.385 rod.

I would see if I could get a 4.375 crank in there - cost the same!

Re: 454 standard deck versus tall deck

stock truck pistons are garbage and heavy.

you will want a spanky rod and a regular piston.

yes a truck head will fit on a regular deck block, but the truck heads are typicaly garbage peanut port/small oval.

the only thing really worth reusing is the crank and the block. all are 4bolt main, all are forged cranks, and the pushrods are specific to the td block.

you will need to use intake spacers or a td designed intake. if you use spacers you will need a adjustable height dist.

Re: 454 standard deck versus tall deck

you can get stroker kits for a tall deck, they use the 6.585 rod ,the truck pistons are big heavy and have 4 ring lands, not made for performance Ross.JE. SRP,Diamond all make pistons for tall deck blocks with the long rod.Depending what heads you use ,as far as exaust port height and the .400 higher deck you may have problems fitting headers.

Sanderson makes truck headers that will work with a tall deck engine. They are the ones Stacey David used when he put the 572 in his Copperhead '67 SWB.
