Gosh Darn it I miss her
I went out today to finish putting my big girl in storage for a few years til I have the dosh to import a new engine and driveline (I snapped my tail shaft and it took out a chunk of my gear box and transfer case and my fuel lines and a corner of the sump in May 09). I was out in the shed lying under her having a D&M session when I came to terms with just how much I miss the big girl. So rather than buying fuel stabiliser and fogging cylinders and all of the other great advice given to me - I am going to hound the insurance company to get her back on the road - we can always rebuild in a few years but this way we get to spend quality time together.
So.... She is a 72 K20 running a 1999 6.5L turbot V8 diesel with a (I'm assuming here) New Venture Model 4500 5 speed transmission with I guess it to be the original transfer case and tail shaft. What is the best gear box to put behind it? Where is the best place to buy these parts? Captain RamRod and Aussie folk - is there anywhere in Aus that you know of? Will I need any other parts? Also - does anyone have tips to get diesel out of my hair? Thanx again for your help guys - I love this forum - you are all so generous with your words of wisdom.

Sorry to hear that you are down in the dumps about your truck. I think I would just go with the same transmission. I think it would do a good job for what you use the truck for... A truck.. ![]() Any good shampoo should get the diesel out or you could use what my grandpa always used to get axle grease out of his hair, hog manure.. It doesn't really get the grease out but nobody will get close enough to you to be able to tell there is anything there... ![]() Good luck with your truck. LockDoc

Anaheim gear in Anaheim california is where i bought all my parts for my nv4500 trans. I'm sure the shipping cost would be outragous though. But a good place to check http://www.anaheimgear.com.

Re: Gosh Darn it I miss her
D&M is a deep and meaningful were we discuss the deep and meaningful issues of the world. Completely different from the S&M session that your filthy little minds were working on.

Your truck is a beauty. The photos in your album are outstanding as are your farm and country. Looks like you can see for miles and miles. You are a talented photographer. Hope you get her back up and running quickly.

Awww shucks flattery will get you everywhere.
Now I will have to take pix on the road trip and post them for you kids. The question is "Where shall we go?" I am thinking a trip to the top of Australia would be a good day out. Hang out on the beach and chill.

Re: Gosh Darn it I miss her
So help me out lads... the guy from the auto transmission shop just rang.
He tells me I should just take out the 6.5 (my original plan) and put in a new motor (my original plan) I told him I wanted the 6.6 Duramax. He told me that was a waste of time as the motor was old and useless. He suggested the new Cummins - I thought they were a Ford motor? Then he suggested the 6.0L Gen III motor that they run in the commodores here and says they are getting 8.2L to the 100km fuel economy - seems a bit too good to be true. Is this man full of ****e? My tosser alarm tells me he is. No matter what I said he had owned ten cars just like it - then again he kept calling my chev a suburban. He says it is impossible to get a duramax to lay rubber down off the mark - I suggested he cruise through YouTube... he told me those motors were impossible for me to ever own. Actually forget it - he annoys me even if he is right.

Re: Gosh Darn it I miss her
Ouch....put a Cummings in a Chev??? Blasphemy! ;>o
I have a '03 Dmax one ton flatbed....love it. All 3(chev, dodge & ford) newer and older verson diesels all have their weaknesses. Mine is the injectors....they will go, it's just a matter of time/mileage. If you want to bone up on the Dmax engines, do some reading here: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php I'm not a big fan of chipping & heavy dmax mods....yes you can make them scream & burn the tires right off.....but the longevity is severely questionable. But heck if you have the $ for when she blows, then go for it! I like the armor rail around your truck.....interesting & unique. Ireland & Oz is on my bucket list........someday it will happen! RD |

Re: Gosh Darn it I miss her
When you get to Oz give me a call.
It is called a bull bar and side rails over here - stops the roos etc and for people who drive like me it makes shopping centre car parks a joy... drive by touch!

Bull bar & side rails........I like.
I need those and a belly pan on my tractor. I was grubbing in the woods & backed a stick from under and behind the engine....right in to the fan. Pivvvvvwiiiziiip...the plastic rad fan disinetgrated. When it warms up here I'm dragging the welder out for some exercise. It was -12(C) here the other morning. Keep us posted on the engine swap. 67-72 dually/flatbeds are kinda cheap here.....old farm & work trucks & I have a fantasy of dropping a diesel in one. Add it to the list............. ![]() RD |

Re: Gosh Darn it I miss her
Thanx mate,
No we have to ship in everything I believe. He is the captain of the "floppy shoe wearing clowns with small man syndrome" brigade and won't be coming anywhere near my baby. And if I don't get off here and go to work to make some money the Chev won't be going anywhere either. Ciao

Re: Gosh Darn it I miss her
i would definately put my vote in for either a 6.5 or a d-max. 6.5 is going to be the easiest to swap back in (1- there was already one there, 2- not many d-max's come as manual trans, harder to find the manual stuff for them)
i have a real hard time believing anyone is getting ANY mileage out of a 6.0 gas engine. im not real sure what your measurements convert to, but 6.0s get about 12 miles per gallon from what ive seen, with 6.5s getting between 18-24 depending on the truck and who is driving it. i cant really say on the 6.6s. i also think the cummins is over-rated, yes they are a power house, but you pay for that many times over with how often front ball joints and steering components will need replaced. you said you thought the cummins was a ford motor-- they are actually there own company, which is contracted out to dodge. powerstrokes are in fords (made by international) and duramax's are isuzu motors

Re: Gosh Darn it I miss her
The mob who I got to give me a quote can't find the gearbox and transfer case anywhere in Aus and are struggling to find someone to import it.
I will stick with the 6.5L for now and try to fix the drive line. Then later we will play mechanic. For now though it seems it is impossible to find the parts.
