Re: international v8 scout motor
I had a '71 Scout II. The motor is NOT a chevy motor. It is a 345 V8 made by international. The auto trans used in these trucks is a Chrysler unit (727). They used Dana 30 axles, and Dana 44 axles as an upgrade.
They are good motors, although not nearly as common as a small block chevy. This makes parts for them a little more expensive. I imagine if it is a decent runner, it would make a decent engine for an Apache. Now as far as how to mount it, I'm not sure. I don't know how the mounts are, but I'd be willing to bet they're probably different than an sbc.

internationals have about the worst head design ever. make good torque but horrible on gas for so little hp. they are noisy dont rev high.

Re: international v8 scout motor
My '71 Scout II got 12 mpg with 4" of lift and 33" tires AND an auto tranny. I'd imagine it would be capable of better mileage with tires closer to stock size.
