Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
The guy's on trucks (tv show) put a 8.8 ford out of a explorer under there AD truck. I've put one under two 57's and my 38. You can get a low milage rearend with disc brakes and posi track that don't need to be rebuilt for 200 bucks. Do they make stonger rearends? YES, but not for that price.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
I would not worry about breaking a Chevy 8.5, 12 bolt or a Ford 8.8 with most applications. A 9 inch is over kill for most people ( I have one in my 55 210 454 and its over kill). Unless you have a serious motor and putting your foot in it all the time you don't have to have a 9 inch. Ring gears on a Chevy 10 bolt is 8.2, Chevy big 10 bolt is 8.5, 12 bolt is 8.875, Ford 8.8 is exactly that, and then you have the most teasured with bragging rights 9 inch. The rearend you chose should depend on the car's use. If your building a monster than you may want a 12 bolt or 9 inch, if you build a cruiser with a little pop to it you will be fine with a 10 bolt or Ford 8.8. I'm concerned with gear ratio and I love posi. for the kind of stuff I build.
Here is the rear thats in my truck. Its a Chevy 8.5 with posi 3.42 gears. Last edited by Kabwe; 01-28-2010 at 06:56 PM. |

I plan to use the rear from the '94 Z28 my engine and tranny came from, when I obtain 350 bucks. It is a 3:23 posi with disc brakes.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
I was thinking of a 9" but have had a 8.2 in my chevelle for 10yrs with eaton and superior axles, have 150 1/4 mile passes on it started out running mid 12's now 11.30 yes it will break someday but if one can hold up this long with that kind of abuse then i know it will hold up to a street rod. I'm thinking of putting it under my 53 now that ive broken the 11.50 barrier NHRA rules no c clip. the 9" is as stated earlier in the topic over kill for the street but if thats what you want more power to you, it will be the last thing that will ever need to be replaced on you truck

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
If you want to know your gear ratio on a 10 bolt 8.5 which you have. Take the cover off and turn the ring gear until you see a set of numbers stamped on the edge of the gear this is the tooth counts for the ring and pinion. You divide those numbers and it will give you your gear ratio. For example if the numbers are 48:14 you divived 48 by 14 and it will give you 3.428 which is 3.43 gears.
