This.

I was young (and after reading this you'll wonder how I got old). My friend and I were putting in a shift kit in a TH350 in my '66 C10 in preparation for a cross-country trip. It was winter and we were working outside. As the day ended and the temperature dropped, I decided to stop even though we were close to being done. This is called having "good judgement".

We went inside and had a few. Then my friend talked me into finishing the job now. This is called having "bad judgement".

I went outside in the dark and laid in the snow under the truck to put in the accumulator cover. I couldn't see the O-ring so I had to do it by feel.

Got cleaned up and drove the truck a short way to a party. Everything felt fine.

Left the party in the wee (and cold) hours of the morning. Flying down the highway I see this LARGE rooster-tail of smoke in the rear view. Yup, I sliced the O-ring and now the transmission was relieving itself on my exhaust cross-over.

On the off ramp the truck lost drive. I jumped out and poured my extra quart of ATF in the filler (well most of it anyway) and then drove a few more miles before it crapped out again.

I jogged my frozen butt the last couple of miles, put a few quarts of ATF in a backpack and jogged back. I always remember this incident when I'm tempted to push-on when I really should stop. As to the drinking and wrenching...I solved that by giving up drinking. That also frees-up more cash for parts...

That is very true. Drinking around vehicles is a no-no. The show-off factor when we are sober is bad enough, let alone the show-off factor after we've been drinking.

I've seen people get sober late in life. As long as he's breathing there's always hope.

Re: im drunk

not a truck but you'll get a kick out of this

we where puttng a motor in my GTO got it al fitted in bolted down and ready to fire..we wanted to prime up the carb ..so I was looking for a good conatiner to put a little gas in .....hmmmm beer bottle (you can see where this is going) so I pour some gas in the bottle and give it a squirt ( pour in carb) flip the key and it wont fire????? so I go about checking things a buddy shows up cracks a beer and is going over things with me..well after about a half hour we figure it out I reach thought the window while he works the linkage.. i fires up and is in break in mod... I grab my beer and toast the completion and sucsess!! he grabs his ...clank....glug glug glug!!!! ....yep he grabbed the primer bottle

tha dance he did spitting and chokeing was very funny!!! I told him he was not to smoke or be near an open flame till the next day!!!! To be young again it would have killed me today!!

Re: im drunk

I kept this public only because if it helps
another person that is too nervous to speak
up as well as this young man, it's all good.
Perhaps not but I must speak up anyway. Alcohol is a
SOB if it causes any grief at all.
Don't get me wrong, beer is good, for most people
and bad for a few of us
I'll stick to the basics of the Thread/Forum from here on in, thanks!!

Go to an AA meeting yourself one time young man.
Sounds like you don't need it, but if you want him
to stop maybe you can find the help you both need to
pursuade him to try. Anything is worth a try when it comes
to your dad.
I went to a whole bunch at first........ been a couple years
now since I stopped in, that's a bad Alcoholic.
if you sit and listen, there is a pile of help within that organization.
It's not as bad as you would think and I'll tell you, you
will never laugh so hard, maybe your dad will too.
A real laugh is something Booze takes from a drunk.
I already knew this but didn't see it until I heard it
from someone else.
I am a bad example as I only went a bit but I will
tell you, they make you think differently and that
helped, lot's with certain things. Life got better, fast.

The "Big Book"is worth a read too, it's not so much
the stories but the stuff written into them. Hidden
messages if you will.

Time will heal most anything. Your dad is no exception.
I wish you well. Have you looked him in the eye's and told him
how you really feel? I missed that chance with my dad
and I ended up closing his eye's for him, and I wasn't
ready for him to go yet.

That's it, back to Bowties, Boobs and Big Blocks !!

Re: im drunk

That mythbusters treadmill clip is awesome!

Ive never worked on my truck drunk before but something happened when I was young and dumb. I was pulling the driveshaft on my truck, laying under it on a creeper on an inclined driveway. Forgot to block the tires, took off the U-joint straps and pryed on it with a bar and the truck started rolling down the hill with me hangin on underneath for dear life. The rear tire rolled over my foot, luckily my foot was turned sideways and I had thick soled workboots on and my foot was fine. After riding the creeper being pulled under the truck about 20 feet it hit a chainlink fence and stopped. I learned my lesson!

I once opened my hood and saw a 502 Big Block and when I sobered up it was a 250 Strait 6. Beer will do funny things to your eye sight.
