gauge/idle fuse problem
Recently I have been having problem with my gauge/idle fuse blowing out and making voltmeter and speedometer stop working. The first time it blew out I changed the fuse and the alternator wasnt charging anymore. Changed the alternator and everything was fine until today when it went out on me 3 times. First, fuse went out after the Service Engine Soon light came on. Second, fuse went out after I floored the pedal to pass some slowpoke. Finally, went out on it's own without any indication why.
My only other thing to do now is figure out where this fuse leads to. My guess is it might be a problem with the charging system, as the voltmeter stops reading when the fuse goes out. Help guys with a wiring diagram or form of guidance as to what to check. Oh, almost forgot, its a 91 chevy burban. Last edited by KazuyaIB; 02-14-2010 at 11:13 PM. |

Re: gauge/idle fuse problem
"gauge/idle", is that how the fuse block is labeled?

Re: gauge/idle fuse problem
sorry misread the fuse, it says Gage/Idle...
Update: Now the fuse blows out as soon as i push the key forward, soo it must be a major electrical problem |

Re: gauge/idle fuse problem
I don't know what that fuse protects, but the way it is blowing I am thinking that there is an ignition-hot wire that is grounded somewhere. I say that since it gradually got worse, and is now blowing whenever you turn the key on. Sound like something has rubbed through and is "permanently grounded".
The GAGE part make it sound like it powers a portion of the cluster, and the IDLE part makes me think something TBI related?

Re: gauge/idle fuse problem
I guess I'l try tommorow to remove the cluster and see if something is wrong in the wiring. I'l also check entire outside wiring to be sure. This problem is really kicking my butt. When the fuse goes out, voltmeter and speedometer goes out, the truck turns on and runs fine, but the only problem is the truck dies after about 20 minutes since the system isnt charging anymore, i know the alternator isnt the problem. GRRRRRRRRRR.... gotta find that short circuit.
