5.3L superchargers
anybody done any before and after testing with a 5.3L? gonna put a 5.3 in the boys 66 and may eventually put a whipple, magnacharger, kenne bell on. looked on the net but can't find any threads on forums with results. don't really want to do any inner mods maybe headers too but that may be it.

if you look on performancetrucks.net they have a section for supercharged applications. the tvs 2300 looks to be the best out there

If you keep the tune up safe, the 5.3 can handle plenty of boost and make really good power. There's a couple local guys around here that have junkyard 5.3's with cheap turbos making a ton of power for little cash. One is a 1st gen RX7 and the other a 3rd gen firebird, both are running 9 sec 1/4 mile times at 140+mph. The best part is if you hurt it, a replacement long block is ~$350 and you're back in business.

I would do a turbo and contact Trick or KB Performance, they sponsor Performancetrucks and they have very affordable kits.
I am on the fence of what to do with my LQ4. probably going to do all the bolt ons first and then go from there.

found this on ebay. looks awful small and i'm not up on these enuff to know if this is an old unit or what. it's for my 11 year old sons truck so he mainly wants sound and looks. i got a local friend that has built a few kits for LS cars/trucks. none have issues but just thought a plug and play would be nice. i can't believe guys want $3500+ for a used charger on that performance site

believe me i know. got a turbo busa now with ams100 and ****load of other electronics. that's why i hate to spend a grand on this if it won't make any power or have much noise. i could put that and the DT header money towards a custom turbo set-up

not worried about the power as much as the bling factor. that ebay charger looks way small. plus if it's a model that hasn't been made for 7 years. then you know it could be warn out. with the turbo, he can pick a color to powder coat/chrome the tubing for cruise nights. plus i can pick out a "noisey" BOV that will sound cool. no matter what goes on, it's only gonna be 4-6psi.

I've got a magnacharger on my 69 Burb (5.3). I haven't quite got to that part of the build yet, but I should be within the next month. I'm hoping to get an extra 150 HP out of it, especially after the tune. I don't think it will make as much noise as my Vortech on my 68 SWB, but they look pretty cool sitting on top of the motor, . I have been very impressed with the vortech power.

I saw a 5.3 going for $800 on my local craigslist!! 109K miles on it. With a inexpensive engine, you can afford a super charger!!

thanks alex, i'm acutally watching that one. i asked the question about noise of it. i get the feeling that the seller knows nothing about it. never heard on a truck. dad got from friend. don't know anything about it. makes me wonder about it's life. why did previous owner get rid of it. how many owners before this owner. a grand would be cheap but not for a paper weight

Those Whipples are really nice, but not that loud - only under load. Those things are good for a crapload of miles.

I would get the part number or serial number off of it and call whipple and get the low down on this - I did notice that there is no lower pulley so either its missing or the system runs off the accessory drive.

i didn't see a fuel pump either. don't most use/need an inline pump? i've several have asked for a part# and he keeps dodging the question. don't seem to know anything about it.

I had a procharger setup on my 2003 Avalanche, after 2 transmissions and 1 rearend I decided to take it off. It was killing my truck the way I drove it. It was too tempting to break the wheels loose at every light. I had $3700.00 in the entire setup new. I recently took it off and traded it for a nice ski boat.
If you have the cash and want more power its well worth the money, but make sure you have a good engine/trans to support it. If you wanting to put it on old, high mileage powertrain its a waste of money... Last edited by tonypaul; 02-18-2010 at 12:24 AM. Reason: spelling |

basically i'll build the trans for the truck to match my station wagon. rear will get a good posi as well. i found a D1 procharger kit for $2500 as well. figure i'd start researchin now incase a deal popped up i couldn't pass on. here's the wagon in action

just put a 2.3L Whipple blower on my 5.3L LS1. Picked up over 120hp at the wheels on 91 octane with 6psi boost. Still have some tuning to do and I think there's a little more power to be had at that same boost level.
