What's it worth? 1966 Fleetside BBW shortbed
I'm a newbee here and would like your opinions...Whats it worth in todays market?
Its a 1966 shortbed fleetside big back window with original 1 owner family and original California black plates. I want to buy it and want to know what's the current market price. I drove it 40 miles today with the owner and it drove well the whole way. Starts, stops and steers like a little old lady's car. Its a 6 cylinder, all original, never molested truck. Never hit except recent fender ding on right front fender (golf ball sized hit) straight and with all original paint (1966 grey with factory white stripe). All gauges work, radio stopped working years ago and his kid pried the glovebox door years ago. Found the original buildsheet behind the original covered seat too!! Got the granny first 4 speed on the floor, was a ranch truck its whole life. He knows its a valuable truck and wants $3K. What's a nice old truck like this really worth? I actually think that its worth all of that and mabye more cleaned up and if I buy it I want to clean it up and drive it on the weekends only...Dont want to jump in too fast here... [IMG][/IMG] Thanks all! |

In my area a truck like that would be worth more than 3k. Don't know about your area though "market value" for these trucks is very much a regional thing.

Re: What's it worth? 1966 Fleetside BBW shortbed
A running truck that stops and starts and is safe to drive on the road "as is" for 3k$ seems like a good deal to me.
An added bonus is that you know it's pedigree, as in where it has been and precisely what it has been used for in it's life. As a ranch truck, you know it was used & worked. Considering that it is still running, that means someone was doing some maintenance on it to keep it in good shape. Since you have already seen it and driven it, read this : http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/bu...uide_60_66.htm If it is want you want, buy it. It is only worth what he can get someone to pay him for it. It is all about how much is it worth, to you to have it in your driveway. An old truck like that is not an investment, it is something to use for work and fun. So the question is, how bad do you want it? -W Last edited by Woogeroo; 02-21-2010 at 09:00 AM. |

Re: What's it worth? 1966 Fleetside BBW shortbed
Thanks Johnathon and Woogeroo- That's what I thought- I just want to make sure im not getting in too deep if I decide later to sell it. I really like this style (fleetside short bed) and the Big window... Most of all I dont think these unmolested ones are easy to find-Ive restored muscle cars and a wagon (64 Tempest wagon aka Pestwagon) but this will be the first pickup. Its so complete I wanted to cry out when I saw the build sheet in the seat!
The wires under the dash are perfect, never cut. It is completely road worthy-the 72 year old owner drives it to his summer cabin 100 miles away and his 65+ year old wife prefers to drive it there over her '80 Caddy! So, its VERY dependable and drives Very well. His dad bought it new in 66. Here's the problem-I have 4 cars already and am 1/2 way through a 66 Chevelle SS clone project and have known of this truck for 15 years, and just knocked on his door to see if he wanted to sell. I was surprised he wanted to-reason is on his cabin property the grade is steep and it slid in the rain/mud there and his wife hit a tiny dent on the front fender on a tree. Now he wants a 4x4 instad of a 2 wheel drive. Anyway, I'd like to buy it and keep it all original and drive it as is on the weekends around town. |

i agree. if its a fairly rot and cancer free truck that runs like your grandma's buick then make like a frog and jump on it. someone who really knows about these trucks woulda jumped on it long ago. but its good to see you doing some homework and not jumping into something that may be over your head. but yes definitely jump on this before someone else does

Same-same in my neck of the woods. $4k wouldn't be out of the ballpark.

Your from Cali so seeing clean rust free cars/trucks is common. If this is as clean as you describe it, that's a good deal. If you choose to buy it only to turn a buck, you shouldn't have a problem picking up a few.

Ok that settles it...I went and spoke the the owner- he said he'll go to lower (I hate to report to you all) he'll go to $2000 and throws in a custom-built cab over camper that sleeps 3-4 that they had built 20 years ago in good condition! Guess I'll be fishing/camping with my 2 boys (12 & 13)and the daughter (5) now!!!

Re: What's it worth? 1966 Fleetside BBW shortbed
Well, today was a nice day-finally had time to shine up the new find...Pics are here!
Found these in the glove box..original owners manual and protecto plate... Took pics of the outside after removing the camper rubber bed protector off the back bed. I got a lot (30) of little screw holes to MIG shut!! The tailgate is pretty dented up...but fixable... Motor is the numbers matching original straight 6 (292) and it purrs...no smoke!! Front end shot...nice!! Anyways I want to restore this unmolested survivor to its original glory someday. The rear wheels appear a bit wide. Need to find regular/standard width rear rims and original caps. Anyone know if on a original paint all grey truck were the truck's rims satin or glossy black? Or were they grey/body color? Decided this is gonna be the wife and my special ride- used for dating like the old days! Took her out to a restaurant for ribs today... had 2 fellas ask about the old truck. Two other guys from the neighborhood came over later to check it out...one was really liking it, but I told him it wasn't for sale. He told me to restore it back to original state...I am really liking this truck! Last edited by pestwagon; 02-27-2010 at 11:28 PM. |

Re: What's it worth? 1966 Fleetside BBW shortbed
Wheels were gloss black on solid paint trucks. Always a good idea to research colors before painting, especially if you want an authentic period look.

the rims on solid color trucks were black.the rims on tu tone trucks were lower body color except black and white trucks had black rims also.i think they were gloss black instead of satin, but not sure on this.might ask lilred on glossy or satin.

Re: What's it worth? 1966 Fleetside BBW shortbed
Satin, I believe, from what I have seen and read. The 4x4 trucks, two-tone or one color, the wheels were satin black and as stated by collins above on the 2wd trucks.
