87 tbi
I've got an 87 that's all stock as far as I know. I've got some questions regarding the computer and tbi. What all does the computer control? Just the engine? I'm just thinking along if I were to replace the engine later down the road what are my options for horsepower. Not alot of horsepower, I've got other cars for that, but just to add to it. Do I add an aftermarket throttle body and remove all the factory stuff?
Where can I learn more about the 87 throttle body? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Re: 87 tbi
Your 87 ECM controlls your engine management system as well as the transmission and parts of your insturment cluster and if you have it the cruise controll system.
As far as adding horsepower it all depends on how huch cheddar you want to sink into it theres aftermarket ECM chips aftermarket intake manifolds and TBI units theres some cam options theres cold air intake systems and high flow airfilters theres headers cat back exhaust systems high flow cat's. So really it's just up to you if you arent lookin for alot of HP id say go with some quality headers and a high flow airfilter and exhaust system and maybe a ECM chip and call it done! Re: 87 tbi
I would spend the money that you would have spent on an aftermarket chip and buy the stuff to data log your engine and burn your own chips. It is not hard to do and is a great thing to be able to do.
It is not very expensive for a chip burner and data cable to connect to the data port under the dash. As long as you have a laptop it will cost you less than $150 to do it. Even if you have to buy a cheap laptop to do it it is worth it to know what your engine is doing and to be able to customize the tune for your truck. Check out thirdgen.org they have a great burn your own chips series of articles with links to all the equipment and cables you will need.
