Valve Kits
I looked and didn't see this specific thread. So, I need a valve job on the truck. Can anybody recommend a company that sells the complete kit?
I called LMC and they don't. |

Re: Valve Kits
What are you looking for in a kit (valves, guides, seals, springs, retainers, ect...)? Are you grinding the heads yourself?

Re: Valve Kits
Hellz no. I'm just taking the heads off and taking it down to the machine shop. I'm still moving into the new place and haven't even put the concrete floor in the barn yet.
This is my daily driver (until I buy another truck) so I figured I'd let someone else do all the "fun" stuff. |

Re: Valve Kits
Then what the hellz kind of kit are you looking for.
I'd just hand them to the guy at the machine shop and say "Call me when they're done".

Re: Valve Kits
I use Baker Machine in Mesa. If you ever make you way to the Valley that could be an option. They do all of our big diesel generator heads at my company and have even done ATV's for me. I just tell them to rebuild them and they take care of it. It's funny because I told myself today that I needed to drop my 283 heads off there this week. I can let you know the cost or maybe we can get a deal on all 4. Who knows.

Re: Valve Kits
Holy smokes! That's some serious high end stuff over there. Hmmm. Let me check with the guy who exterminates all the moths in my wallet...
StuckinAz... if I wait a while and fix some other junk I might just take you up on that offer. Otherwise, it's the crusty old dude at the machine shop. Our conversation went like this. Me: Hi, I have some really bad fouling on number 7 and number 3 plugs, probably a valve guide leak... He: So's ya' need a valve job right? Me: Um. Yeah. He: So's ya' wanna' do 7 and 3 or do the whole thing and do it right? Me: I want to do it right, what's it cost? He: Hunnen' and eighty bucks a side. Me: I bring in the kit? He: Yup. Me: Let me get a card and I'll check with the Missus. And then I came over here to see what kit I should get. |

Re: Valve Kits
Wow, around here I can get a set of SBC heads done for ~$200 including new bronze guides and seals. Of course valves and springs are extra.
If you're just needing a source for valves and springs, check out these places.... http://www.summitracing.com http://www.jegs.com http://www.northernautoparts.com http://racersoutlet.com/ Even though there is 'racing' in their name they still have stock type parts.

Re: Valve Kits
I think you need to have a longer conversation with the crusty old dude and find out specifically what he would be doing for $180 per side. Find out what "kit" he's expecting you to bring. Unless his is the only machine shop around, get some more estimates. Ask questions.

Re: Valve Kits
How's your compression. If the bottom end is "worn" you slap some nice tight heads on it and it won't run for shiot. I learned that the hard way....

Re: Valve Kits
Thanks for all the input.
As far as the crusty old dude goes. He is indeed the only game in town. I'll be calling Baker Machinery in the morning. As far as the truck goes, I need to wait for my temperature gauge dealie to be shipped from San Diego and I need to set the timing. I went with what I know and headed over to the local Moterpickle shop and found a crusty young dude who's worked on these things before. He'll give me a hand with the timing since I can't figure out how to do that on my own. Trucks are a lot bigger than bikes...and lack a center stand. |
