4X4 shorty headers?

I have a 1972 chevy 4x4 and was wanting to put shorty headers on it, but can't find anyone that knows what will fit for sure. I bought a set of hookers for a chevelle/monte carlo. Jegs said they should fit but I was hoping someone knows from experince

its a small block with A/T

Re: 4X4 shorty headers?

Small block? Any shorty center dump will work. The big block guys like the Chevelle 3/4 length header. Personally, if you are going to run headers on a small block, run full length. Otherwise, just get the 2 1/2" Corvette rams horns.

4 speed or auto? If it's a manual trans and you want a full length header, I would run Heddmans. When I put headers on my Jimmy, they were the only ones I could find that would work with the stock clutch linkage. But I ditched the headers for the 'Vette manifolds and consider it one of the best mods I have done.

Re: 4X4 shorty headers?

Why short headers on a 4wd?Headers are better the longer they are and ground clearance isn`t an issue.Longer tubes help keep the torque you need in a 4wd.The shorter they are the better manifolds look.

Re: 4X4 shorty headers?

4x4 full length headers tuck as tight as the exhaust pipes. I don't think that should be an issue. Mine were well above the bottom of the frame rails, especially compared to the 2 wheel drive headers.

Just buy the manifolds is my opinion. No leaks, no rust out, no loose bolts, and so on.

Start fires? That is usually from catalytic converters... from parking on top of dried out grassy areas.

Re: 4X4 shorty headers?

Was running, Heddmans. They were the only header that actually stated it would work with the original clutch linkage. After looking at them, I think you could probably run 68-82 'Vette headers with the OEM linkage and enough clearance to the cab.

well I grew up on a farm in eastern wa and own property over there, most fires start because people that dont know how dry it is start them

full length headers get grass heads, wheat, straw caught where the tubes come together. most of the farmers over there will not let you on their land if you drive an older rig with full length headers

Re: 4X4 shorty headers?

I have lived in WA state all my life... and have lots of time in Eastern WA all over the place. Whether 4 wheelin', huntin', fishin', or campin'. Myself and lots of friends have had numerous rigs with full length headers on them over there. Not a single problem... ever.

Its the cat converters that are the suspects.

well sorry I have seen first hand the rath of fires on our land. they were from headers. they did not have cats on them. anyways I do not want to run full length headers on my pick-up, and I just wanted to know what shorty headers would work in my rig. thank you

Re: 4X4 shorty headers?

I just did the same thing and after lots of research I went with Hedman #69640 headers. They are shorty headers for a Jeep/small block chevy swap. They fit great but I had to do some very minor trimming on the driver side frame rail. I went with shorties so I could add a cross member under the motor, plus sometimes the shackles would rub the headers when flexing. However, spark plug changes SUCK!! I had to install several from underneath and tighten w/an open end wrench.

Re: 4X4 shorty headers?

Take a look at Hedman #69230's They don't hang below the frame and no shackle bolt interference.
