Re: Welded rear
im with dj... race only? GO FOR IT. just remember if if it breaks something it will most likely break more then it originally would so it may cost you in the long run. but for a budget racer i say DO IT.

Re: Welded rear
NHRA has a rule against it, (for good reason) and if your caught don't be surprised if your black ball'd from the track. Tech really hates when you slip something by them unseen. First line of General Reg 2:11
WELDED SPIDER GEAR REAR ENDS PROHIBITED IN ALL CLASSES

Re: Welded rear
Yes welded spiders will work. I understand the budget thing but when you weld those spiders you turn the rear into a bomb. Its not a question of if it will break its just when. Btw a 12 bolt will hold up to most of what you can throw at it.

Broke my posi unit one weekend and was in hurry to get back to track and just threw in an old carrier I had laying around so I couold get back on the track the following weekend. In hind sight, I shoulda just waited for my new unit to arrive.

Re: Welded rear
I say DON'T WELD them. They will break and you'll go down the track on 3 wheels. If anything, buY a mini-spool. Chris.

Re: Welded rear
My advise is not to because the rear wheels feel like they want to hop, and feel unstable. And if they don't allow it why risk it.

Re: Welded rear
X2, that setup will never work. I got a mini spool for my 10 bolt in my little truck for $89.00 at the Hot Rod Barn down in town. I busted the transmission off the motor and twisted the driveshaft once coming off the light but have never broke the rearend.

Re: Welded rear
I have ran welded up 8.5 10 bolt rears for years with out fail. Engines were 400 sbc and 355 sbc. All were turbo 350 trans with a shift kit. Cars were 78 and 81 camaro's and 79 nova. All were footbrake cars with B&M 3000 rpm and ACC 3500 rpm converters. I was a poor boy that wanted to play so that is the corner that I cut.

Re: Welded rear
if you weld it dont weld the spider gears together
weld the gears that attach to the axle to the carrier it will be much stronger
