How To: Hang a Door
So I got an aftermarket door and finally got around to installing it today. It doesn't seem to line up. I will take pictures and post them for your ideas but her is what I see...
The door adjustment can go in or out from the body but not up and down. How do I get the door down a little or back. The gap is real tight at the top and the front, and real big at the back and sticking out at the front corner. Any of you guys have any tricks or have any of you hung an aftermarket door? I am sure there are a TON of ideas on build threads but have no idea where to start looking. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have no experience in this area but wouldn't it go back by shimming between the hinge and the door? Out and in would be by shimming between the cab and the hinge yes? Up and down could be done by elongating the bolt holes?

I removed the cowl and loosened the hinge there, apparently there is some adjustment there. I used some spacers and it lined up much better. The back of the door is still hanging out a little from the cab but I will have to figure that out.

this might be the issue... the 67-72 guys almost always have to replace the upper hoop on their aftermarket doors with the original, poor fitment issues on EVERY ONE that i've heard of.

The biggest issue I have had with the 64-66 doors is not the fit with the opening or upper door frame. They seem to fit ok. This is also true on stock doors. I had to try 3 stock doors on a 65 passenger side to get one to fit OK.
All these trucks were really built like crap back then by the standards we have today and built in different locations. Doors take the most work and doing body work you will spend more time on doors than any body panel. Its true on todays cars and trucks as well. People have to remember that they are also working on 40 to 50 year old stuff. The biggest issue I have found with them is getting the hinge bolts installed and after they are installed the door does not have enough adjustment to line up properly. You can line up the door loose and looks good but can't do it with the hinges on. We had to go redo the mounting locations. We sell TriPlus doors and these are the ones I'm talking about. Maybe they will fix it some day. However due to the way these trucks were built I don't think they will ever get doors to just bolt on perfect with the variences in the cab and prior work that may or may not have been done on the truck years before Last edited by mbgmike; 03-21-2010 at 10:46 AM. |
