Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
Just like the title says. what would you prefer behind a 383 stroker pushing around 420 hp 450 tq. It will be a daily driver and sometimes go to the track. Ill get on it hard a couple times a week when i just have too but will just go back and forth to work most of the time.

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
Just based on cost alone the th350 is the better option and with a couple upgrades will be way less prone to breaking than the 700r4. A th350 with a decent converter and heavy duty sprag should hold up just fine. Theres a laundry list of stuff you need for a 700r4 to maybe hold up.

Yup, you'll spend $2K for a 700R4 like mine. Worth every dime in my book. I put a good beating on it.
Check these out: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700MegaRaptor.htm Mine is between a level 3 and 4. |

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
Well I have a th350 right now. But I plan onkeeping the truck forever so I figured that a. 700 would maybe save me so mpg. I found a 700 for 200 bucks of course it will need a rebuild but I should be able to get maybe 300 for the the350 so I could recoup some money from that. Besides in my last th350 at 65 mph it was drinking gas. That was in a 64 impala as with stock 350

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
man I'm thinking about the same thing right now. I have a decent built T350, but I want the 4th gear.

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
i second that. i have the same setup 383 pushing 410 hp and 450 f/lbs on a turbo 350 done up and i still want another gear... doing 2200 2500 rpms on the highway isnt so great on gas haha get a 4L80E. its a tougher tranny and with a shiftkit and a higher converter it should be just as good as the turbo 350 plus you still have the 4th gear

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
I like the TH400. The TH350 is great too. Get it if you don't mind the higher revs and lack of 4th gear. There are plenty of cheap TH400/350's laying around that will stand up to the abuse you can give it. For $2,000 you can get a used or rebuilt one, and then use the rest of the money for a used gear vendors OD/UD.

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
I like a good 700 but just make sure you get a heavy duty converter I broke several of them before I got one to stay in my old street street extra cab.
Call Bob Harrison at TCI he is the 700 god in my opinion.

does anyone know anything about the monster transmissions or bowtie transmissions. I think monster was used on Copperhead.

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
I can tell you thing, if you go with the 700, the best money you will spend is the 150 bucks for the tv made ez from bowtie overdrives. you can not get it to shift right without it. it will always be off somewhere without it. the best mod i know of for the trans system. And on the converter, go ahead and get a good one, i have a 383 with around 430 horse and i have already replaced one converter in 3000 miles.

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
I have a ART Carr 700r4 with the 9" convertor 3200 stahl, have had it for 8yrs no problems and almost 200 1/4 mile passes 12.60 @107 3300 lbs and i drive it like i stold it everytime. I called Art Carr and asked for some info once and almost got in a fight over the phone when he told me he never built a 700 come to find out they just use his name. That being said have you thought about a 2004r if your going to spend money on an overdrive their very good transmisions and can take more than the 700, also fit in the same hole as the th350. no drive line shortening

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
LOL. I got into an argument with another racer when I told him I had a Redneck converter made by Art Carr. He didn't believe me, but then I showed him my reciept and it said Art Carr/Redneck Performance. I did some digging after that and it seems that a lot of people use his name in/on/around there products.

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
I've been on the fence about selling my 4L80E for a glide in my truck just because I don't drive it a ton on the street any more and always in the search for weight. But then again, if might go slower with a 1.8x first gear.
For a DD, I'd want an OD with lock up verter. If it takes $2k to get a 700 to work, then you might be ahead getting a used stock 80E and buying a controller for it. These 80E's are strong!! Also remember, it isn't HP that breaks transmissions, it's TQ and heat.

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
Don't quote me but I think controllers are some wheres between $700-$1200.. Depends on who's you go with. I don't know which ones do what or are better than others though.. IMO, if you can set the upshift by RPM/throttle position, down shift by rpm/throttle position in all gears and converter lock up by throttle position and/or mph in 2nd through 4rth, you should be pretty good to go..

Re: Th350 or 700r4 behind 420hp 383
PoPo I have a Monster 700R4 behind my 383 which is kicking @ 438hp and 474 lbs of torque running a 2300 stall.
I have to admit, this is my second ... I did blow the converter in the first one, not sure I seat it right when it was installed. But I called them and I had a new one in 3 days, gotta love a warranty, ... and haven't had a problem one not to mention it barks the tires on my heavy weight in 2nd gear so ... I bought the full conversion kit even thou I already had an older 700R w/o a lockup converter. But got cooler, converter, TV cable, Flywheel cover, and the 3 Year Warranty, shipped for free all for $1895.00
