Anyone got Vent window Repair tips??
Does anyone have any vent window repair tips. I bought a set with good chrome and I am trying to replace the rubber and it is giving me a hard time. Has anyone done this successfully and remained sane???? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

It's been awhile but you need to drill out a few rivets, there are replacement rivets that come with a little tool for this repair. Once you remove the rivets you can replace the rubber easily.

You have to drill out the rivets that hold the glass to the window channel.
I left the pin that the glass pivots on because mine were in good shape. When you are reassembling use good rivets that fit well also your rivet gun will need a narrow nose to fit into the channel to get a good seat. If you have the old channels practice on them first as you will get better at it as the more you do it. Then when you put the assembly back into the door the question will be does the bottom rubber go on the inside of the door or overlap to the outside. You will understand this a lot better when you get to this point. Have fun and let everyone know how it goes.

I am really not sure about the way to install the lower rubber on the vents. Each one of my doors was assembled different when I disassembled them. When I put them back on I went with the rubber to the outside, my thinking was that this would help to keep the moisture from getting inside the doors. But the more I look at them I think that they originally were ment to install to the inside. Which would provide a smoother look. I have asked this question before and most people seemed to think either way whichever you prefer. This would be a good question for the experts on these trucks.

I put new rubber around mine, but didn't drill out the rivets. I left the original divider post rubber in place, as mine was in good shape. On the triangular piece, I slit it (from the inside) to clear the lower pivot and slit it at the top to get all the way to the top. I use a large pair of linemans pliers to gradually squeeze the rubber into the grooves all the way around. When I was finished, I put a little drop of sealant into the two small slits I had made.
I didn't have the little flat rivets and my window pivoted just fine, so this method worked fine for me (note: it was a major pita. Took me about three hours to do the two windows). It fits up fine and stops the wind whistles I had before. I have not opened and lcosed them much since that time, because it SNOWS EVERY DOGGONE DAY lately. OCB |
