17.5 3/4 ton wheels
I've found a set of 1962 (I think) non split rim 17.5 3/4 ton 8 lug wheels.
Somewhere on either here or the hamb -I can't find the post- guys were saying that you could use a 17 inch tire on a 17.5 rim? or was it an 18 inch tire? the wheels are on a 2wd gmc.. will I be able to use them on my 63 k20, or are the k20 wheels different than the c20 wheels ? will I be able to find tires for them?

Re: 17.5 3/4 ton wheels
Back in the 70s I used to buy the special order wheels and tires for Peterbilt trucks. These were generally in the 20 24.5 sizes. At that time all the even sizes 20, 22, and 24 were tube type tires, mainly for use on split rims. The half inch size tires 20.5, 22.5 and 24.5 were all tubeless tires for use on tubeless wheels. The reason stated for the .5 designation was to prevent tube type tires from being used on tubeless rims or the other way around. With the tremendous pressures and weight involved it was viewed as a safety hazard. I presume .5 tires wont fit on an even size wheel, but I never did actually go out and measure the rims to know for sure.

The main difference between 17" tires and 17.5" tires (or 22" & 22.5" etc) is the taper of the bead. The difference between them (5deg vs 15deg taper) is enough that, under pressure, the tire will come off the wheel with enough force to remove limbs (including the melon stupid enough to try it). They are not compatible and even if you found a shop stupid enough to mount them I would suggest leaving the area while they do the job. I am still amazed at the amount of people that fail to realize that a tire is a bomb! If it is rated at 100psi, for example, think about how many square inches there are inside of a tire and do the math. Never try to mount the incorrect size tire on a wheel. |

Converting 17.5" to 17" for greater radial tire selection. Use the old center add a new ring.
