Please tell me if this fits? Oil spin on adapter
So I bought this from Summit.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SES-3-60-08-900/ It is a spin on oil filter adapter. It doesnt come with a filter. So today I went to AutoZone and while I was getting a filter that fit the threads to the adapter in my picture, the manager stuck his nose in my business and told me that this will not work. He said that there is "no way" this will work because there is no way for oil to come out. I told him originally there was a "containaster" oil filter in my 66. Then he told me "well there has to be a line where oil comes out" (on the canister) and I told him there wasnt. Anyway, now this guy has be askin' you guys. So who has done this and will it work??????? It is supposed to! Here are the pics. |

Hey Scooterskoolkustoms,
Did your 87 have a "canister" oil filter? |

Re: Please tell me if this fits? Oil spin on adapter
that is not an adapter to put a spin on filter where a canister was. that is the filter by-pass assy that bolts to the block of an engine that already uses a spin on filter. go to napa & buy the kit. when you remove your filter assy the will be a by-pass valve similar to that one in there in the block. it will be re-used under the adapter when you install it on your block. the adapter will look like a round flat bowl that has the nipple on it & a flat surface for your filter gasket to bear upon. the manager was trying to help, he just didn't know what you really needed.

I think I found the correct part! Thanks Andy. I was a little bit confused myself. Take a look, where does the gasket go?

Re: Please tell me if this fits? Oil spin on adapter
when you install your kit the new longer bolts will go thru the adapter, thru the by-pass & into the block. the seal for the old canister will go between the block & adapter & should be a felt or rubber seal between the by-pass & adapter. the nipple will loctite into the adapter. if you install the adapter without the by-pass under it when you crank the engine cold the oil can't all go thru the filter & it will blow the filter gasket out between adapter & gasket. don't ask how i know. hey, i was only 15 at the time. instructions? i don't need no stinking instructions!

Also make sure the nipple in the center the filter spins on to is secure. I had one come loose on my '62 Impala SS and back out. I didn't detect it and right after an oil change the filter came off going down the highway with the nipple still in the filter. Got it shut down before I lost oil pressure but another couple seconds and it would have been real ugly.
