finding a diesel
hey guys, i was thinkin about tryin to sell my one truck but the more i think about it the more i relize im not gonna be able to get my money out of it. so if i decided to keep it i wanted to look into putting a deisel in it. would it be better for my to go find a whole donor truck? or is there places that i could easily find an older diesel from another squarebody to put it there. the truck wa son fire to rewire most of the truck anyway. just havent ventured into the diesel world to much and was curious if there was an easy way to locate them.

craigslist has worked wonders for me, I dont think you need a complete donor truck to do the swap but would advise you to find one you can hear run and possibly drive. JMO though

There are tons of them out there. The 6.2 will bolt in but be aware there are a number of specific parts (like the throttle cable!). Best bet is a complete donor.
6.5 can be made to work easily, and turbo too as long as you don't have AC or are willing to do some plumbing. But why would you do this to yourself? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=405575

I planned on doing the same thing with the 6.2 detroit. its simple to do i guess... everything transfers over without needing to switch out wiring harness's, The hot wire that goes to the distributor on the gas motor is just instead run to the injection pump on the diesel.
The fuel lines and sending unit in the tank are different as well. When your finding your motor the best way to tell if its still usable or not is how it starts. Factor gm glowplug controllers are crap, the engine should start with no either, if the motor has been started with either its most likely junk. Either is to explosive and compresses the crappy cheap connecting rods lowering compression in the motor. Once compression is gone the engine wont start without the either. Thats as far as i made it in my diesel conversion, my donor motor would not start without either but ran awesome once started. |
