Electric Fans

So what's everybody recommend out there for Electric Fans, goin' into my 454 meant for towin'.

I would recommend the dual 11" SPAL fan set and a fan controller/ extra relay set, from them to run the fans. The fans are capable of moving some serious air across the radiator and their FAN PWM will run them in either slow or fast speed as needed to get the job done. I have two of these setups in my trucks and we have not had any overheating issues with them.

A puller fan is more efficient, than a pusher type.

be prepared to drop some doe my friend, jegs sells a black majic, or some funky name like that.. it fits perfectly on our radiators (seals whole surface area) btw, its dual 12inchers...... but a 454 up hill.... thats some heat, my 2,500cfm has trouble during our summers in traffic....

personal advise: wire a over-ride on/off switch in cab!!!! (just incase)

2,500 cfm, I was looking at some that draw almost 4,000 cfm on a puller style with dual 14s or 12s. And what since when you have a 454 in you truck?? My little baby 305 should be okay ahaha

I'm using the Jeep fan on my 85 with an adjustable controller from Summit,stout vortec 406,keeps it good and cool.

My question would be: What do you call expensive? A good set of fans that work or a new engine for the one that you just smoked?

It is amazing what people will do to their vehicles. They will spend serious money on the engine, wheels, or even the stereo, but when it comes to a good set of fans--they skrimp on the cost. My observation (and I just saw this on the Power Tour, this year) There were some really nice cars with some good HP under their hoods---SITTING along side the road with green coming out from under the hood.

I am running the SPAL dual 11" fans (2850 CFM each) on two of my trucks and I have another set in the basement for the project that I am building out of my 68 SWB. I realize that their cost is around $300.00, but it is worth it, because I don't plan on sitting beside the road. My 84 has a storked 385 engine and it made it the whole Power Tour trip without ever getting above 210 degrees. That includes mountains, hills, short back country roads with a lot of stop lights and to top it off the hot humid area around Mobile, Alabama.

Summit racing sells the SPAL fans under the "Be Cool" name and these guys have packages that a person can buy on their website. Just some input for the process.

There is a thread in the 67-72 area about retrofitting a newer Jeep 19" fan into the fan shroud of one of our trucks. It fit really nice and the shroud only needed minor mods to make it fit. I just can't find the link. I have it bookmarked but only at work.

The fan blade & motor setup they gave the part number for was used in a recall for some 2000-ish Cherokee and was only around $60.

If you have a good factory shroud this is the way to go.

The late 4th gen Camaro's have a dual fan setup that fits our radiators pretty well too if you don't have a shroud. Not sure on the exact year but 2000-up is thrown around a lot.

The biggest advice I can add is no matter which route you take, please also install some sort of temperature control for the electric fan. You do not want the fans running all the time as during freeway speeds the running fan will actually block more air through the radiator than it will move. To further add to my previous post, I ran a universal Aluminum radiator with a single 12" Spal puller fan with a simple controller that just had a probe that pressed in between the radiator fins with no shroud on my 500 caddy swapped C10 with zero issues and that truck was driven all over the place and driven hard. The cooling is one area as others have mentioned to not skimp on.

So far it appears that the Mark VIII and Spal are the top choices, so I'll take your guys' word on it (i also read up on the links posted above). I'll have to run a price check at my local junkyard and see if they have any Mark VIIIs, and what they want for it. If it's too much then I'll concider going Spal. As for the controller's, i believe I'll stick with Spal, but should i go with the 185 or the 195?

There are many temperature controllers on the maraket. Some have probes that insert into the coolant system somewhere. Others will have a probe that inserts into the fins of the radiator, or into the radiator hose connection at the raditor. There are some that actuate off of the installed temperature sensors on the engine.

Below are listed some outlets for fan controllers. I am presently using the SPAL units in my trucks, but there are others that are just as good. You want one that is prgrammable, Waterproof, and heavy duty for the fan relays. If you run two fans, you want an extra relay to control the fan. If you want to save on that, go to a junk yard and pull a couple relays from the mid 80s trucks that they used on their heater controls. They work real well and do NOT fail in ahigh temp atmosphere. many small relays will just fail open when they get hot.

"The FAN-PWM-V3 is not intended for use with fans that draw more current than 30amps continuously. This includes (but not limited to) SPAL extreme performance fans, Ford Taurus fans and Mark VIII fans."

Not even controllers can keep up with high CFM fans!! The use of relay is basically mandatory.
