What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

Any suggestions as to which types of wood or stain colors look best with a black truck? I'd love to see some pictures of examples if there are any out there...

Black wenge is an African hardwood that is good looking.

Wow, that sentence could really be inappropriate in certain circumstances. I was talking about for in your bed... er, that didn't make it much better.

Ya, I had to re-read that last comment once, just to be sure! I'm definitely thinking I like the darker woods will look better....

i think a flat black stain on a gloss black truck would look great and be very unique.

Re: What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

i'd look up a local specialty wood supplier in your area and look firsthand at what is available in the local area// if you want a black tint the standard age old lampblack stain works well

Does your local high school have a wood working program? or know a cabinet maker in the area? Both should get orders of wood in pretty regular and wont charge you much, if any over what it costs them.

Re: What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

We definitely have no shortage of Ponderosa Pine around here... (Getting the government to let us log it is another matter... ) I'm sure I could do a full bed pretty cheap in pine, but wasn't sure if it would be suitable for a truck bed. Maybe I'll look for some pics of pine beds...

Re: What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

If I go with a black stain, I'd think pine would be sufficient material for the job. It's definitely easy to get around these parts... Not so much the African hardwoods and exotics of that ilk.

Here's a an oak deck with a mahogany box. The lines on the box are reflections of the bed skid strips.

Re: What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

I would go with a hard wood and stain it. I just replaced a a bunch totally dry rotted pine off a deck railing. Was only about 20 years old.

Re: What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

exotic woods will be very expensive to have custom cut. Since I hate oak, I suggest maple and stain to desired color. If you want the wood to outlast the truck, try and find some kiln dried epa (eepay). Without protectant, will last up to 30 years, 50 years sealed. It is also as hard as steel, you will not get a deck screw into it without predrilling the holes.

Re: What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

I'll try to take a couple of pictures of the original wood in mine. It's starting to warp, but its under a bed mat, so I should be able to get an idea of what it was to start with...

Re: What kind of wood for the bed of a black truck?

Most originally came with white or yellow pine painted black. Very few came with oak as they bought what was cheap. My truck originally had pine, but I couldn't tell if was yellow or white pine.

My truck was originally black when I bought it. I changed to red oak with just clear varnish and stainless strips. It looked good. It eventually weathered out and the grains actually started turning and dark gray-black color which kinda looked neat with the black truck. Below is the only pic I could come up with for now.

I have clear varnished Ash now with my new blue paint.

I have only seen it as residential tongue/groove type flooring, but if it is available, black bamboo would look pretty cool.
