250 P/S help
Does anyone know if the p/s pump for a 250 is unique, as far as the alignment of the pulley with the other pulleys on the engine. I was installing my pump last night and after it was mounted, I discovered that the pulley does not line up with the water pump or crank pulley. Also, do I need a 2-groove alt. pulley? Any help would be appreciated. I know this is a common topic, but I tried the search function and could not find anything. The other issue I am having is my coolant temp is running hotter than it was with the old water pump pulley. Is there a big difference in the diameter of the pulleys? I was
thinking that the w/p may be turning slower if the pulley is larger in diameter.

I'm sure you will get many people here willing to help you. There are several different power steering set-ups for the inlines, which is why it's best to get a complete set-up including all pulleys and brackets from the same engine. That said, they are going to get more and more uncommon as time goes on. I'm pretty familiar with 2 of the set-ups off of Nova's ('74 with a/c and '72without). The one without a/c runs on the 2nd groove, and requires a 2 groove pulley on the alternator. The one with a/c runs on the 1st groove, and does not require a 2 groove alternator pulley. There are some set-ups that have a wide space between the grooves on the pulleys, so they don't require a 2nd groove on the alternator.
Regarding your overheating, the 2 groove water pump pulley that I used was actually a little smaller. Is it possible that you have a thermostat issue? I'll be more than happy to take some pictures or help you with part numbers if you want. But remember, there are different set-up, so that means different part numbers.

Heres some pic of mine and couple of others I'm not sure who they belong to that I've downloaded. Notice none of them are the same. Over the years people have added p.s. and changed pulleys, etc. As mentioned above the best thing to do is to remove them from a vehicle that had it from the factory to get every thing to match up. It may take so junkyarding and flea marketing to find all of the parts.. Good luck.

AFAIK, there is nothing special about the inline pumps, but there are a bunch of different mounting brackets, which vary by year and application. I have found it is usually best to get the complete front end setup off a car engine, as these are much more common than truck inlines with PS.

68gmsee, my brackets are the same as the ones in the 3rd pic you posted. The brackets
all bolt on fine, it's just a pulley alignment issue I'm having. The pump pulley is too far forward to line up with the other pulleys. That is why I asked about the pump being unique to an inline six. Maybe the pulley is specific to an inline? I'll pm the member I bought it from. Thanks.

NC67chev, I measured my 2-groove pulley and it is slightly smaller than the original, like you said. I will replace the thermostat and see if that is the cause. I think you're right, because last night on the way home from work, it did not heat up, but this morning it did it again. Thanks for the tip.

How much is off is the water pump pulley from the PS pulley? Do you think it's off by about 1/2 inch?
Feel free to take/post some pictures and measurements. Or better yet, post some pictures of measurments. I'm betting that you need a water pump pulley with the extra space between the grooves in order to make your set-up work. Something like this one:

I was wondering the same thing, but that would mean I would have to change the damper as well. I will see if I can get some pics this weekend and post them with the measurements. I would rather find a different pulley for the p/s pump than to change the water pump pulley and damper, but I may have to go that route. Thanks again for the info.

How far off is it? If it's minimal you can shim with washers. That's what I did on my other truck when the pump was off by about 1/4".

68gmsee, the brackets I have are different than yours, they will not allow the pump to move far enough back to line up due to the type of bracket. I think I need a pulley with a different offset to make it all line up.

The pic doesn't show a "straight line" shot so it's hard to tell how far off you are.
If I were you, I'd try to locate the correct brackets for your engine to mount the alternator. I got mine from the dealer but that was about 15 years ago. I have seen them on the some junkyard vehicles also, so that may be another option. |

68gmsee, those are not my pics, Mt Man Chad posted those. My brackets are the same as yours. My p/s pump pulley is a single groove. Can you get a p/n from your p/s pulley?
I think if I get a 2-groove pulley for the pump, that would solve my problem. Thanks.

last pic from nc67 chevy that one works without the double alt pulley,like the earlier one that just runs off the water pump .Wow this is a nightmare gettin parts for this very hard to find i got lucky and found a wide pulley and put this in my 67 nova but had to space the fan 1 inch to clear the p/s pump pulley.If you got this stuff or know where to get it and you may need it grab it! Thanks for getting that number, I will check it against mine and see if it's the same. I know mine has a number on it, but I don't remember what it is. Yeah, somebody else told me about the special tool for removing the pulley. If it comes to that, I will just see if I can get another pump with the correct pulley. Thanks again for the info.

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead. It doesn't look like 70STOVEBOLT got any resolution here. I did see a 2013 thread where he got a different pulley from a boardmember.
I have the same problem. But I think I have it figured out. I have 3 complete sets of Inline 6 power steering pump brackets, 3 pulleys and two pumps. My first big problem was just assembling the erector set that makes up the bracket set. I have the correct spacers and bolt lengths...but what a pain in the ass. Here is a picture of how it turned out. No so great. None of my pulleys will line up and the pump is a bit crooked(the picture makes it look worse). Here is what I have found to correct the problem. I ordered these 2 pulleys: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271974107654 and http://www.ebay.com/itm/271974107973 The first one cross references to a GM#3834720 looks just like a 38810 from Classic Performance. The second one looks like a GM#3770509 or 38809 from Classic Performance. I also saw this page with an AG-515 that says it is a pulley that is offset one full groove. I purchased this bracket for my 292 it is very well built and solid what I liked is that it allows for forward and back adjustment of the pulley for alignment. My friend just purchased one for a 250. This is a link, I know its pricey but it works also look into what type of water pump you have before ordering as I believe he has two or three models for the 250.

I don't really need more brackets. I have 3 sets of factory brackets. I just need the right pulley(I think).
I had seen those for sale before I started accumulating factory style brackets. I did just discover this morning that one set is slightly different. I'll take pictures and post later. I just got done blasting everything I have, so I can get everything painted. |

Here are some of the parts I have...besides what is mounted on the engine. Top Left - I don't know the part Number - One is on the engine in pic above Top Right - 343301 - One is on the engine in the pic above Middle Left - 354527 Middle Right - 355789 Bottom two - All the same. I don't know the part number but I have another on the engine. If I use the two in the middle row instead of the two in the top row, It will place the pump slightly further back on the engine. I'm mainly just posting this here for reference. I have looked at old messages and there is tons of info already out there...but not many part numbers. |

Jason, I forgot about this thread. I ended up buying an aluminum pulley off of eBay from a company called CVF racing, their p/n is CVF-SBC3PS. The one I bought from blkcorvair was actually for a 283 and I sold it to chewychevy. I have since put a 402 in the truck but I still have the 250 p/s setup. The brackets look like your middle row and bottom left in your pic above, plus another bracket that runs from the rear of the pump to the block by the lower alternator bracket. I can take some pics tomorrow and post them if you want.
