needing more heavier duty shocks
i busted my rear shocks on my dually pulling 8,000 pounds today (worn& leaking).
im wanting to know which shocks to purchase from a auto parts house because i need to pull 12,000 next week to scrap. it rides good now but im needing something that can handle a lot of weight Last edited by jake wells; 07-10-2010 at 04:21 AM. |

Shocks do not "carry the weight" so it really does not matter from that standpoint. All the shocks do is take the "bounce" out of the springs.
A good replacement-type shock should do you fine. If you truly "busted" them from the weight, they were either too long to start with, or already on their last leg. The shocks should not be the travel limiters of the suspension.....but it ususally breaks the mounts if they do.

is that true on a gas filled shock vs. a bath shock. under a load it might be cycling more and heating up. might be some theory behind what he is saying if the truck is always under a load. just bringing the topic up because i don't know the answer either.

A gas charged shock is just keeping the oil under pressure to keep it from foaming. When the oil foams up it looses it's ability to dampen, but it still is not supporting the weight. So the amount of weight or how often it is loaded don't matter.
The truck would be like an over-grown pogo-stick with out them.
